Our Past
How it all began!

Semiformal - Feb. 1993

It all began in 1991 when we were in grade ten at Glace Bay High School and were introduced by a mutual friend. From there we had began to talk at school and on the phone. Over that year we had come close to going out a couple of times, first time we sort of chickened out and called it off, second time he had to cancel for family reasons and the third time he forgot about the date and stood me up. After that we went our own way over the summer. It wasn’t until November of 1992 when we began talking again at the science fair and after it was over Darrell called me and asked me to come over his place to watch a movie. We began dating from there and by Christmas it was official we were going steady.

We continued to date through high school and in June of 1994 we were both graduated and were off to U.C.C.B. Darrell took a Bachelor of Arts and I took a Bachelor of Business Administration. Over our years in university we had some good and hard times and for a while we decided to be friends for a while but realized that we loved each other very much and wanted to spend the rest of ours lives together.

In January of 1997 Darrell went to my father and asked her permission to ask me to marry him, and of course my Dad said yes. Darrell had plans for a romantic evening but things didn’t go as he planned. Darrell had not informed me he had any plans for the evening and I decided to go babysitting. I left a message on his machine to tell him where I was. After Darrell had gotten off of work he tried to buy me a rose, but they didn’t have any and had to settle for a Tiger Lily. He arrived home to find my message and decided he would join me and go ahead of his plans. When he got there he gave the flower and told me to smell it. To my surprise there was a diamond ring in the center and he got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. And of course I said yes! We had set a tentative date of October 13, 2001 to get married.

Just after getting engaged, Darrell decided to change his career plans. He had decided to become a chef and had been accepted to the Culinary Institute of Canada in PEI. In August of 1997 we packed him up and moved him off to Charlottetown. I was continuing with my business degree at U.C.C.B. while working full time at Clover Group. Darrell spent the two years in Charlottetown, working at Dalvay by the Sea during the summer for his work term. In May of 1999 Darrell graduated with honors in the top ten of his class. Upon graduation Darrell accepted a job at Inn on the Lake in Waverly and moved to the Halifax area.

It was then that Darrell came up with the suggestion that we move the wedding date up a year, why wait was his question. So after checking it out with our parents we decided to move our date to Thanksgiving, October 7, 2000 and the planning (and headaches) began.
