  • Kingdome Come
In a controversial move today, the city of Seattle did away with its landmark of the last quarter century, the Kingdome sports stadium. Kingdome Implosion Page Architect Jack Christiansen's design was sound in terms of engineering principles, but didn't anticipate the evolution of professional sports towards big money.

  • All Aboard The Sushi Train: Sushi Takahashi
I had never eaten at a mechanical sushi bar before, so it was with great interest that I visited downtown Portland's only kaiten-zushi restaurant tonight. Different places do this idea in different ways: I have heard about moving belts and little boats floating down a miniature river. At Sushi Takahashi, a model freight train wends its way around the sushi bar, pulling a line of flatbed cars loaded up with little plates of sushi. The chefs even wear engineer hats! If you see something you like, simply grab it off the train as it passes by. I was ever-watchful for their uni (sea urchin roe) coming around the bend. Better grab it the first time, or that tasty dish will be gone the next time the train comes around! At the end of the evening, the number of plates you have collected allows the waitress to calculate your bill. It tends to be cheaper than what you would pay at a regular sushi restaurant.

  • Heads Up: Nikkei 2000 Coming
A brochure came in the mail today* for the Nikkei 2000 Conference which will be held in San Francisco CA from 27-30 April 2000. When this conference (then called Ties That Bind) was last held, in 1998 in Los Angeles CA, I only found out about it months after the fact. One of the legacies of that meeting is the Ties Talk e-mail list (see the Archives). This year's theme is "Empowering Our Community in the 21st Century". When I first read that, I thought it didn't apply to me. I don't feel particularly disempowered, in the political or economic sense (except when the Visa bill arrives each month). But then I realized there can be cultural disempowerment, and that the Internet has helped against this. The conference will have some sessions related to this theme, such as "Where Is Our Center: J-town in the New Century" and "Using Technology and Mass Communication as Community Building Tools". Check out the conference website: www.nikkei2000.org
    * Note for Canadians: There is Saturday mail delivery in the U.S.!
