My Profile

Living Nikkei

Now my sister and I are adults, living away from home and leading busy professional and social lives in the English-speaking Western world. We have to go out of our way and make time to find, see, hear and do things Japanese. When we learn about Japanese culture, it is from the perspective of a non-Japanese, but with expectations of performance levels of a native-born Japanese. We are reminded of our Japanese heritage whenever we look in the mirror -- but what does it mean? Is it relevant? Is it important? To us and, perhaps more importantly, to the next generation? We may think that being Nikkei isn't a major factor in who we are or what we do, that we are fully assimilated. Yet every so often our actions or approaches to situations won't be like a typical North American's.
