Locked Out II

Winter temperatures in Alberta can reach -40 C. Before driving anywhere you must run your car in neutral for few minutes to warm up the engine. You also need to clear any snow and frost off the windshield and windows. To save time, it is customary to do both at once. One night I started our car and inadvertently locked the door when I got out to scrape the windows. Toyota at that time was using an interior door handle with a design that incorporated the lock toggle in such a way that the back of one's gloved or mittened hand could press the toggle into "lock" position whilst one's fingers pulled the handle to open the door. One gets out, closes the door, and is locked out. Bad design for a situation probably not familiar to the designers. This must have happened to others, who complained. On more recent models, the driver's door can only be locked from the outside with the key.

Thought I'd scrape the frost

While the engine warmed.

Now I can see the key

Through the locked door's window.

Japanese designers

Never imagined this.
