Devyn Soyokaze
Question 1: What is your character's name?
Devyn Soyokaze
Question 2: Character's gender
Male
Question 3: Character's age
17
Question 4: Character's cursed form, and reason for curse
None.
Question 5: Character's Martial Arts Style.
Arashi Aki no Ballroom (Roughly translates to Ballroom's Autumn Tempest. It
sounds silly but gets the point across).
Question 6: A general description of the character.
He has shortish black hair, not too short, just long enough to blow in the wind (If you
need an example, think Tuxedo Mask-like hair). He has green eyes, almost a forest green.
He has a
tendancy to dress somewhat formally, favoring black slacks, white button-up dress shirts,
black
sports coats, thin black ties and black dress shoes. Personality wise, he's kind of quiet
and
reserved. This even carries over into his fighting and dancing. He just doesn't give it
his all unless
he has to. That certain desire to push himself just isn't there. That doesn't mean he's
without care
or passion, though. He loves life and especially likes nature, favoring sitting under a
tree and
watching the leaves fall. In fact, he so loves falling leaves, they seem to follow him and
blow in the
wind in his pressence cherry blossom-style. He talks in a fairly quiet voice, never
raising his pitch
above a normal voice. He just doesn't have it in him to get angry and yell. All of this
figures in to
the fact that his favorite dance (and the one he bases his fighting style around) is the
waltz, a dance
so full of life yet so prone to leasureness, much like Devyn. Just as an extra note, Devyn
speaks
perfect Japanese (no hint of dialect) but speaks English with a distinctive British accent
Question 7: The character's history.
He was born to a Japanese father and a British mother. His parents met at Oxford
University and were married soon after graduating from college. Upon their mariage, the
two
moved back to his father's home country of Japan. It just so happens that they moved into
the
house right next door to the Tendou residence. The two families became friends quickly,
especially
Mrs. Soyokaze and Mrs. Tendou (this is before her death). In the next few years, Kasumi
was
born, followed by Nabiki. A month after Nabiki was born, Devyn entered this world. Seeing
that
raising young children would be a great responsibility, the two mothers felt that it owuld
be good
for both the children and themselves if the two of them took on joint babysitting duty.
This went
on, even after the birth of Akane. As soon as they were able to notice the difference at
around age
2, Nabiki and Devyn became very close. They were only a year apart and could relate to
each other
better than they could the older Kasumi and the still infant Akane. The two mothers let
this
friendship grow naturally, not letting the fact that they were a boy and a girl get in the
way. Once
they were about 5 years old, Mrs. Soyokaze came upon a great idea. Since her son was
reaching
school age and she would have more free time on her hands, she decided to carry out her
life long
dream: to open a dance school specializing in ballroom dance (she was a dance major at
college).
And to celebrate this event, she took on her first customers: Devyn and Nabiki. She wished
to
build on their natural friendship and train them to be a great dance couple. Neither one
was
particularly thrilled about the situation (they both preferred to watch cartoons over
dancing) but
neither one struggled either. At the same time, Soun Tendou offered to take in Devyn as a
student
at his dojo. this didn't make Devyn any more enthusiastic (it meant less time for cartoons
than
before) but he saw that Akane was also in the first stages of training and felt that at
least he'd be
with another friend (Devyn had become friends with Akane as well, but nowhere as close as
with
Nabiki). He took to both with ease, building upon his natural speed. His only problems
were his
focus and determination. He had great natural talent (and still does) but splitting his
time between
dance and martail arts, coupled with his lack of sheer enthusiasm, led him to be good at
what he
does, but not great. Soon after this, Mrs. Tendou died. Mrs. Soyokaze took on some of the
duties
of being a mother towards the girls, especially towards Nabiki, and she pushed the two
young kids
further in their dance training, leaving Devym less time to practice his martial arts.
This only
brought the two closer together, and soon Devyn found the one dance that fit his
personality: the
waltz. Seeing this small spark of true interest, Mrs. Soyokaze emphasized the waltz in
their
training. By the time they were both 8, they were ready for their first dance contest.
While they
didn't win first place, this was just the begining of their competitive partnership in
dance. Within a
year, they began to win contets and they were seen as an up and comming dance team in the
amateur leagues. At about this time Devyn saw slight but obvious similarities in his dance
and his
martial arts. It was at about this time that he began to experiment in his new martial art
style:
Arashi Aki no Ballroom. This trend continues for a few years until Devyn reached 14 years
old. At
this time, Mrs. Soyokaze's father was strucken with a life threatening disease, and she
insisted that
hse and her family move back to Britian to see her father through this horrible time. Of
course,
neither Devyn nor Nabiki were thrilled with this. The two of them hadn't been apart more
than a
few days in their entire lives, and now they may never see each other again. Alas, Devyn
was forced
to go with his family to Britian. He refused to take up a new dance partner in defiance of
his
mother's actions, and instead focused his time on the fighting aspect of his art. In fact,
he never
danced one step while his feet rested on British soil. That was three yeasrs ago, and his
grandfather
has since passed on. This has allowed his family to move back to Japan and into their old
home
next door to the Tendou residence. Devyn is in for a surprise when he arrives (Nabiki
deliberately
avoided the Ranma situation in her letters).
Question 8: Special Moves.
All of Devyn's moves are performed with much grace and style. When entering
combat, he usually snaps his finger and calmly says "Let us dance the dance of fallen
dreams." As
he speaks this, fallen leaves will blow behind him, no matter what the season. Being the
gentleman
that he is, he'll always extend his hand out to his downed opponent the first time he
knocks them
off their feet. After that, though, he realizes that the fight is serious.
Low Falling Arashi: Devyn begins this move the same way he begins all of his moves, by
spinning
around. Upon completing his spin, he finishes his move with a low sweeping kick, thus
tripping his
opponent. Once they are off their feet, he then delivers a downwards kick to put them into
the
ground.
Autumn's Waltz: After performing his trademark spin, Devyn will grab his opponent as if
they
were dancing with him. After twirling them around for a fes seconds (and thus disorienting
them)
he throws them to the ground harshly. On occassion, when the fight is especially tough,
he'll throw
the opponent slightly higher so that he can catch them in a Low Falling Arashi on their
way down,
thus adding to the damage.
Ame no Aki (Roughly translates to Autumn's Rain): Devyn's only non-dance move, but he
still
starts it with his trademark spin. Upon finishing it, he summons a windgust that's
carrying many
fallen leaves. While this doesn't do any damage to his foe, it does disorient them for a
moment
Sailor Mercury-style.
Waltz of the Last Leaf: Devyn's ultimate attack. He only performs this one when the
situation is
most dire. It starts the same way as the Autumn's Waltz, but the actual throw is more
devastating.
Devyn will spin his opponent slightly longer than normally, and then her will throw them
up into
the air tothe point that they can no longer be seen with the naked eye. A moment later,
they will
crash down into the ground followed by a couple of dead leaves which fall on their back.
Here is a passage in the format of a letter which the author submitted with this character:
Dear Nabiki,Remember how I said that I have been looking forward to trying out my martial prowess in a real life situation? Well, I had my chance a few nights ago, care to hear about it?
I was returning home from an evening out with a young lady my mother had set me up with. She was a kind girl, but she just wasn't my type. She had this high-piched voice that rattled in my ears minutes after her last spoken sylable. I find such a voice charming in a Japanese woman, but for some odd reason the pitch does not translate well into the English language. Also, het thick cockney accent did not help the situation either. Despite all of this, she was a chipper girl, but I had no desire to go out with her again. Anyway, that was of no real importance, now was it?
Back to this encounter I spoke of earlier. We were walking back to her home. It was close to midnight, and her curfew was fast approaching. In stereotypical fashion, we took a shortcut through the local park, which is renown for the hooligans that hang about during the wee hours. I assured her that nothing would happen, and of course that jinxed us.
We were passing by the fountain in the center of the park when 3 punks dropped from the surrounding trees in a very melodramatic fashion. Luckily for us they were not armed with anything but sour attitudes. They blocked our path and demanded that I hand over my wallet. How cliched! I merely smiled and took the young girls hand and redirected her to the side. I had planned on circumventing them and avoiding a confrontation, seeing how I feared for the girl's safety, but the punks pursued.
Seeing that I had no real chance of evading these creitens, I took the girl into my arms as if I were about to dane with her and readied myself for combat. She was both flattered that I wanted to dance with her (I refused to do so earlier in the evening for reasons that you already know), and angry that I would want to do such a thing at a time like this. Of course, I really wasn't going to dance, per se, but I took this stance as a way to distract the criminals fast approaching us. Once they were close to us, I quickly spun around and gently threw my date above the punks and watched as she softly landed on the other side. I took this opportunity to quickly jab my closest foe in the face to assure him that this was now serious.
The punks began to circle me, and oddly enough they were ignoring my friend. She merely stood by and kept quiet. I took the initiative and spun around and let loose with my Low Falling Arashi on the foe directly in front of me. With him grounded, I casually hopped over his slumped over body and walked over to my date. I took her hand and began to walk away. I assumed that after seeing that, the punks would back off and realize that they were outclassed. Well, the two remaining punks did back off, but instead they called out for their "boss" to come and take care of me. I continued to walk away, at a slightly hurried pace, hoping that we would make it out of the park before anything happened. Of course, things never go that way...
Within seconds, we hear loud footsteps comming in our direction. I turn around and what do I see? I see an enormous man, close to 7 feet tall, with a girth that rivaled that of the biggest sumo wrestlers. I smiled and asked if we could be on our way. The large man grunted and ran towards me. I again took my date into my arms. She thought she knew what was comming next, but instead we both took to the air and landed on a nearby tree branch. I told her to stay put while I took down this uncouth ruffian. I promptly jumped to the ground and extended my hand out in a friendly manner. I knew that the punk wasn't going to extend the gratitude, but I did predict that he would go for the old "pretend to shake hands and ramming one's fist down the polite one's throat" technique that all people like this utilize. As he came close enough to perform the old trick, I pulled off a trick of my own. I attempted to go inside for an Autumn Waltz, but he seemed to have some sort of balance technique which wouldn't allow me to lift him off the ground. As you know, I've managed to lift enourmous ammounts of weight with my ballroom techniques. It's all in the momentum. Anyway, he took the opportunity to introduce me to his left hook. We didn't hit it off too well. After flying back and hitting the tree that my date was occupying, I decided to play a little distraction game. I immediately went into my Ame no Aki technique, hoping that it would distract my large foe. As fate would ahve it, it worked.
Hoping that this distraction broke his concentration, I spun around in usual fashion and opted to finish him with my so-called ultimate technique: Waltz of the Last Leaf. I made sure that we were out of the park by the time he landed. Too bad, I always enjoyed watching the leaves slowly descend after my opponent hits the ground. Reminds me of the cherry blossoms back home in Japan...
Anyway, that was my first "real" fight. It wasn't a pleasant experience, but it was oddly exciting.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I have something very important to tell you. Remember how my grandfather died? Well, since my mother feels that she's done her duty here in London, she has finally decided to allow us to return to Japan. We will be returning in about a month's time. I am interested in seeing how everything has changed since I was last there. You said you have some family friends living with you, but you have not said much about the two of them. I hope I get along with them the way I have gotten along with you and the rest of your family. So, I will be seeing you in about a month. Maybe we can pick up where we left off in our studies...
Devyn
P.S. You are probably wondering why I wrote this letter in English. Well, I figured you needed the practice. Bye.
