Topic: Deeper Meaning of the Sailor Starlights Author: Kotetsu Website: Starlight Pops I'll start with their Senshi names - Fighter, Maker, and Healer. Eien no Starlight (http://www.bishounen.net/lights) mentioned the three elements of the Starlights in an article that labeled Fighter as representing Destruction, Healer as representing Sustaining, and Maker as representing Creation. It makes a lot of sense when you think about their attacks. Fighter has Star Serious Laser, and a laser destroys. Healer has Star Sensitive Inferno, and the fires of an inferno sustain and heal life. Maker has Star Gentle Uterus, and a womb denotes creation and birth. So it fits. It even fits with the roles that the Three Lights play in the series. Seiya - Destruction: Seiya is everything that is dynamic, uninhibited, and passionate among the Lights. Seiya in the anime is loud and outgoing, brash and headstrong, the epitome of an emasculated warrior. You could even go so far as to say that his presence seeks to bring about the destruction of Usagi and Mamoru's relationship. (Although this really isn't a fair statement at all, because Seiya loves Usagi and wishes no ill will toward either her or Mamoru. He merely tests the depths of Usagi's devotion to Mamoru, that's all.) Seiya is a Leo, the sign of pride and leadership, ruled by the Sun, which influences masculinity and free will. All of these elements create the overall image of Seiya as a warrior or soldier, in short, a Destructive force. Also, his association with the color red denotes both *war* and *passionate love.* Taiki - Creation: Taiki writes poetry and music, which in and of itself is an act of creation. Motherhood is often associated with wisdom and quiet inobtrusiveness, two traits which Taiki exhibits in abundance. Taiki is a Gemini, a sign which rules those who are always seeking new ways to express their inner thoughts and feelings. Gemini is ruled by the planet Mercury, which influences thinking, planning, speaking, and communication. Taiki acts cold and unfeeling, but that's only because he is afraid of the pain he will feel if he allows himself to really acknowledge his emotions. Taiki demonstrates again and again that he cares deeply for Seiya and Yaten, and is almost motherly towards Seiya, especially when kvetching at him for being such a rash and headstrong fool. Taiki would probably make a stern but loving mother (or father) someday. Yaten - Sustaining, Healing: Yaten is an Aquarius, the sign of innovative thinkers who search for freedom and independence. Aquarius is ruled by the Sun, which influences detached, impulsive, and unconventional people. Yaten certainly doesn't let societal conventions (like common courtesy) stand in his way. If he wants to express his opinions, then he's going to, regardless of the consequences. Yaten's surface appearance leans more towards the "Seiya" side - arrogant and rude, not nearly as outgoing, but certainly not withdrawn either. But underneath all that is something more "Taiki-esque" - Yaten is very sensitive and perceptive to the emotions of those around him, he is unsure if his mission will succeed, he is afraid that he will lose the precious few loved ones that he has left. Yaten's personality is like a balancing act between the other two Lights. It's like a constant battle between polar opposites. That may be why Yaten is associated with Sustaining, the delicate balance between Life and Death. Another term for Sustaining might be Preserving. Thus we have the Creator, the Preserver, and the Destroyer. =-=-=-=-Kotetsu, thank you for this month's feature. =-=-=-=- |
