Featuring:
M/ S "Heinrich Jessen"
- a sister ship to M/S "Emma Jebsen" -
First a series of pictures of
the "Heinrich Jessen" of Aabenraa, on which I also have had the pleasure
to serve during a period of 6 months and 16 days way back in 1974, but
these pictures I actually took while serving on the "Emma Jebsen", when
the two sisters met somewhere in the South China Sea - - -
Take note of the funnel logo!
This is not the well known
"Three Mackerels" of the Jebsen Company, but the logo of the Japanese company
"Oyama Line" , for which the "Heinrich Jessen" was trading as a feeder
container ship, when these pictures were taken.

"Hong Kong Bar" in Penang require
some special notes.
This bar must be one of the
most famous typical sailor's bars, - not only in Asia -, but in the whole
world.
This bar was , - or maybe still
is??? -, run by the Chinese Tan family and elder sister Annie usually took
care of the daily business, while younger sister was still attending school,
but could often be seen doing her home work in the bar - - -
As a seamen's bar, Hong Kong
Bar did of course have all sorts of maritime stuff, - ship pictures and
other maritime decorations -, but what mainly made this particular bar
different from other seaman's bars was a huge library containing volumes
and volumes of photo albums showing all the sailors that during the years
had dropped by "Hong Kong Bar" to cool off with a beer and enjoy a chat
with other sailors - - -
All customers were simply photographed
for these albums - -
Therefore, - in those photo
albums you could find pictures of all your old sailor friends, - and of
course also pictures of yourself from earlier visits.
You just had to tell Annie
the ship name or the year of the visit,- and in a matter of minutes, she
could find pictures of all visitors that had been there at that time and
on that particular ship - - -
Great idea, - great fun - -
-
At the end of my regular service
in Asian waters, - and as shipping as it used to be declined -, the visitors
to "Hong Kong Bar" were no longer mainly sailors.
Tourists started to pour in
as they discovered the special atmosphere of a real seamen's bar, and as
the sailors gradually disappeared, military service men started to take
over the place instead.
How it is today, - I do not
know, but rumours say that the original Hong Kong Bar has burned down -
- - -
If so, - another genuine piece
of unique maritime history has gone forever - - - -
