- photos of traditional ships -
First a series of pictures of
"Styrvolt", - which is not really a sailing ship, and not really old -,
but very traditional.
She is in fact a fishing boat,
- built in 1943 in Fakse, Denmark -, but still very beautiful to look at
although she was not intended to carry cargo and fly over the oceans like
the trading ships.
"Styrvolt" of Vejle.
Traditional fishing boat, built
1943 in Fakse, - 15 brt, - length 42', - breadth 13', - draught 6', - engine
120 hp.

of Fænø Sund, May 15. 2008.

And now to a completely different
type of fishing boat - - - -
German old-timer, - "Vegesack"
BV 2 -, built in 1895 for fishing in the the North Sea, - and still going
strong after all those years.
In fact, - "Vegesack" is supposed
to be Europe's oldest herring logger!
It has steel hull, and has
been modified several times and was later equipped with a motor, which
during the years has been replaced several times.
So, - "Vegesack" has no wooden
ship "feeling", - and she is not really original anymore, but nevertheless
she is a great old ship, and a joy to watch, as you can see in this series
of photos where "Vegesack" is leaving the narrow Lillebælt heading
towards open water and "working" in the waves coming in from the bow -
- - Beautiful - - -

And here some fairly new pictures
of schooner "Albatros" which I photographed on September 6th. 2005.
This is one of the old Danish
"export" ships, that for some reason could not survive under Danish flag,
but since she was not born as a three mast topsail schooner, her cultural
value is not really high, since she is not original.
She was built in Hobro in year
1942 as a two mast, motor driven freighter, which later on was converted
to a stone fisher.
Then sold to English owners
in the beginning of the seventies, where she was converted to carry passengers
instead of cargo, - and at the same time she got her three masts, as you
see on these pictures.
At the end of the seventies
she was sold to a German company who operates several sailing ships carrying
passengers, who love the nostalgic feeling of sailing on a traditional
sailing ship.
It looks as if the "Albatros" now trades regularly in Danish waters, - so she is "home" -, although she is now flying the German flag.
Please enjoy my images of the
"Albatros", who appears very original, and very beautiful in all her present
glory.

Here another export of Danish
maritime heritage, - the barquentine "New Endeavour" -, built as three
mast schooner "Dana" in Svendborg, Denmark in 1919, and sold to Australia
in 1965.

Now a series with pictures of
schooner "Julia af Faaborg"" as she appeared way back in October 1988,
when I met her while sailing on another schooner, - "Nordboen"
-, between the islands in the southern part of Lillebælt, Denmark
- - -
We headed more or less in the
same direction and it almost developed into a race - - -
The wind was against our sailing
direction, and forced the two ships to alter course all the time in the
narrow waters between the islands, and constantly we crossed each others
wake and often came very close to each other.
In other words, - excellent
opportunities for taking photos of "Julia af Faaborg" from all directions,
distances and in all available light conditions - - -

the southern islands, - not far from Faaborg where she was built -

"Julia af Faaborg"
Built in 1938, by Rasmus Møller's
yard in Faaborg, Denmark.
Length, - overall: 29,9 meters
Length, - hull: 28,4 meters
Breadth: 7 meters
Depth: 2,4 meters
Engine: B&W Alpha, 120

Take note of the "Red Duster"
at the stern -
This is because she was registered
in Gibraltar in those days. Today, in 2008 -, I believe she has been sold
to France and sails under French flag.
Another shameful example of
export of Denmark's unique maritime cultural heritage - - -
