Starting Out When starting a webpage, you always want to lay it out on paper first. With all the things that you want to have on there and all the stuff that branches off from it. After you are done with that, find a server that suits you the best. There is Geocities and Fortune City that can provide you with enough space.. there are, of course, others but these are the most common. Once you have this done, you then start your page. At first, you want to have text to start out, along with some basic graphics that YOU made, of course, you can always have other people make them for you but there is nothing better than doing it yourself. After you have the basis, now it is time to move onto the complex... What to Do and not to Do Your page is up and running... and you want something that attracts attention to the reader/surfer. Don't play music! Well, I take that back... you can play music, but make sure there is a place to TURN IT OFF! Or at least turn it down, I really hate being blasted by some really loud sailormoon song and it drives me up the wall. If you do put music on there, make it a quiet song, like The Locket song, or PSME's Memories of Days past or FF7's Aerith tune. They are quite beautiful and NOT DISTURBING. I do have a small niece that comes over quite often and I dont want her to be woken up because she can be a little pain especially since she is just over a year old and she's at the age where she throws fits all the time! Please be curtious I am sure that other people think the same. No Blinks! Only if you have too. They are very annoying and I can't stand the... they make me twitch. Watch this and see if you really like it. You must watch it for ten seconds though... BLINK, BLINK, BLINK! I hope I get my point across. When you build your webpage, make sure it is easy to find things. I know I have been through many pages that I couldn't find anything in... its quite frustrating. Keep your page simple with complex things. My page is complex, but simple. You can read it, you can find things and I did it all myself, by myself. This page is days of work and blood. I sacrificed Hard Drive space to put Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver, Also Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Flash(I haven't used it yet), Poser 4, Bryce 4, Ray Dream Studio, and some other to get my graphics the way I want them. All that Stuff is About 2 Gigs of my 6 Gig HD. My Pictures and Graphics probably take up about 400mb and games probably take up the rest... 1 Gig left! Thats all! I have no idea what I am getting at but sacrifice is a key in having the perfect webpage. Trust me I know. I'm coming back to Earth now... Back to complex things... layouts are complex, but you can do simple things with them. Text is one simple thing and links are another. Remember, when doing your gallery/pictures whatever... make thumbnails. They are a key to an easy loading webpage and it makes the page look cleaner. Also tables are really nice and you can make them how ever you want to. They are costomizable to your standards and you can use them for anything. That is cool. Try not to have broken links, they really piss me off because people never check there links after they just spent some time making up there page. If they apply for an award and they have broken links, they are not going to get the award or get the best award. Some people will give it a chance if they really like the page... I won't. Use different types of text. Times or Times New Roman or any of those get really boring. Try Arial or san-serif or Comic Sans Ms. Those are quite nice and most people have them. Advertising If you want your site to be advertised... sign up for awards. Most people will link back to you creating trafic for your site. Also sign up for places like Link Exchange, I have and I have gotten plenty of hits since I signed up. Sign Guestbooks, I don't care if you don't want to, if you have a site.. do it. You will get trafic that way. Sign up at Yahoo or other browsers. I know, you have probably tried a million times and still haven't gotten on. Its a pain. Sign up at Webrings, I have one, but I don't have it up yet. I hate that most people never email you back with your comfermation. Ignore those sites. |
