Hi all! Hope everyone had a good weekend. Sorry I wasn't able to update yesterday...work is certainly keeping me busy nowadays. All good though. Without work i wouldnt be able to support my crack and heroin habits. =) But enough of my pastimes...on to other things. Quick question. How many of you out there are "wired"??? And by wired i dont mean i just drank a tall double mocha latte with extra whipped cream and an triple espresso on the side wired, i mean wired as in you have a cell phone / pager / laptop / palm pilot with you at ALL times? Funny how technology works. All these inventions come out, computers have become smaller and smaller, and no one thinks they need these gadgets. Some even scoff at the idea of carrying around a mini computer in their bags...UNTIL...they get their hands on one of these items. Once these so-called "non believers" see how much easier life can be with these gadgets, they cant live without them. Now everything is organized in one place: phone numbers/addresses/appointments; you can be reached any where and at any time; you can get news and stock quotes in real-time; you can even respond to email anywhere and anytime...the possiblities and uses are endless! Almost everything in our lives requires computers and technology nowadays. Pretty crazy. We even take it for granted sometimes. Do me a favor. After reading this, go about your normal routine, but pay attention as to how many things you use/come into contact with - are computerized or electronic. For example: your cell phone, checking email, using your metrocard on the subway, the ATM machine, chatting with friends on AIM...pretty weird considering you may not even consider yourself a "techy" person, but when you think about it - almost every aspect of your life involves a computer. I mean..i can remember (and im not even that old) back in the day when computers werent such a big part of our daily lives. Cell phones were only for the "rich and important people" - actually they werent even cell phones back then - they were called "CAR PHONES" and it was a big 5 lb phone in a BAG that you would carry around and plug into your car's lighter. Computers (for kids) were only really used for games and BBS (bulletin boards)...there wasn't any online chatting back then...jeez...i think the Apple IIC's and commodore 64's we had in school had a hard enough time running "Oregon Trail" than to be used for chatting. (btw...if you havent played Oregon Trail then you're really missing out. That game was BIZZOMB!) Computers weren't even a big part of the curriculum back in grade school - it was a special class only offered to the "gifted" kids (i was lucky...hahah) Nowadays, kids know more about computers than their parents do. Go up to any 9 year old and they can tell you all about AOL...how to chat w/their friends...how to check email, how to go on the internet...and do research for homework, how to type their book reports up in MS Word...some GRADE schools are even offering Microsoft Office certification! My goddaugher...who is only the ripe old age of 2 1/2, knows how to use the keyboard and mouse to play games on the computer. Aint that crazy? Ah well..."times they are a changin'" i guess is how the saying goes. I know for myself - i dont ever leave my house without my cell phone and palm pilot. What's funny is that I don't even use them EVERYDAY! But it just makes me feel "connected" just knowing that I have them with me. hehehe...but when i DO forget to bring them w/me? (god forbid) i feel so "out of touch" or naked. ahahaha ...im sitting there the whole day wondering "hmmmn..am i missing any calls right now?" or "DAMN! what if i need an address from the Palm?!" or "Uh oh..what if there's an emergency and I don't have my cell?!" (im sure some of you reading right now feel the same way). Label me a slave to technology if you must...call me a geek...call me a techy...its okay. All of you are too (in some way or another). Damn! Gotta go. My cell phone is ringing. |
