They’re taking over everywhere, from Gameboys to manga to

But for many of the uninformed who asks, “What the heck is
a Pokémon?”, it is the general name given to the many creatures, over 150 different types
of Pokémon (or Pocket Monsters), and each type has a unique name, the most popular being
a yellow electric mouse called a Pikachu. These Pokémon are the stars of video games for
Game Boy, Nintendo 64, trading card games and a popular anime series.
Pokemon, actually started out as an RPG/simulation Game Boy
game that was released by Nintendo (Japan), Gamefreak and Creatures in 1995. In the game,
they are monsters who live in the wild, wherein people can train them to defend, or just
to be their pets. Here, you play a ten-year old boy who wants to become the greatest
Pokemon trainer in the world. But to be the best, you must also encounter and fight all
150 Pokemon available to fill up your Pokedex (a Pokemon encyclopedia), in order to
capture them all and train them, and fight other

Pokemon to increase their levels. These adorable monsters can also “evolve” upon reaching
a certain level, changing appearances and becoming more powerful. Also, you must fight
all eight Pokemon Gym leaders in order to get their badges, because this increases your
ability to train the monsters that you have captured.
Due to the intense popularity of the sleeper hit game, 34
year old creator Takemoto Mori took a chance on releasing this time an animated series of
the same name in Japan, which became an instant hit with people of all ages, and soon
enough, also with many other countries throughout the world. The show focuses more on a
young boy named Ash Catchem, who wishes to become a great Pokemon trainer, and goes from
town to town, collecting Pokemon and training them to become stronger. He is also aided
by friends Misty and Brock and faces opponents like Jessie and James (Team Rocket).
Though not all 150 Pokemon have been shown in the series as of yet, each episode ends in
a cool Pokerap song that viewers can listen or sing to!
