Va-len-tines in 2000

Finally, it’s our first issue of the new millennium (okay, so it starts in 2001…). We almost never came out, with the busy schedule most of us have. Also, the website has been getting more hits and readers (other than me). But enough of the self-congratulatory statements. Here’s a forecast of what the year 2000 has in store as well as some Valentines (it is a Valentines issue after all) rants.

First off, it looks bright for us fans this year (hmmm, you probably heard this a lot of times). Not only is the primetime slot loaded with various animes but we’re also getting more anime-related events, especially when it comes to film showings. With the kind of popularity it is getting here in the Philippines, it will only be a matter of time when a large enterprise such as a convention (and I’m not talking about that Otaku Rave party that took place some three years ago) would hit us.

Second, more and more theatrical releases are being translated in the US. We saw Princess Mononoke, we saw Perfect Blue, and most even saw Pokemon: The First Movie last year. For 2001, more spectacular movies are being translated. One of which is X:1999, a much awaited film, especially by female fans. Also, the commercial release of End of Evangelion, is being done right now as we speak (although it will most likely appear in theaters by 2001). The Escaflowne movie, Oh My Goddess! Movie, and the Cowboy Bebop movie are currently in the works. The new Vampire Hunter D movie is also being worked on, and is planned to be released with an English version not long after the original Japanese release (Escaflowne is also going to follow this kind of circulation).

Third, with the numerous anime events we’re having, it’s a perfect opportunity for fans to socialize and meet each other. It’s time you all overcame your shyness! ^_^ Between the screenings held in UP and OraCafe (and soon in Ateneo, hopefully!), you can easily find fellow fans and get acquainted with old favorites and new shows at the same time. Also, if you’re still not that bored, there’s the online world with the Pinoy Otaku Mailing List (http://www.egroups.com/list/pinoy_otaku_ml) and the Pinoy Otaku Chatroom (#pinoy_otaku at Skyinet or at #pinoyotaku at Dalnet). For those who have a more specialized field in anime, try going to the Pinoy Otaku Fanfic Mailing List (http://www.egroups.com/list/fildoujin) when it comes to writing or the Mecha Pinoy Mailing List (http://www.egroups.com/list/mechapinoy) when it comes to model kit building. Of course, you could also visit our website (http://geocities.datacellar.net/charlesatan) if you want to keep yourself up to date or just want something good to read (and of course, you’re always welcome to contribute). With all those plugs aside, the bylines (you know, those boxes with some text in them at the end of each article) have a love theme in this issue (okay, so I ran out of humiliating things to say about my writers…or for myself for that matter). I’ll save the breakup/broken-heart byline some other time (next Valentines perhaps). Here’s my one piece of advice though when you break up with someone you really care about or when you’re shunned by your crush: Don’t commit suicide! I know it’s a stupid thing, but trust me, when you’re depressed, death seems like a relief. However, that’s only an illusion so don’t get any rash ideas. ^_^ Besides, where would Kenshin be now if he didn’t get over Tomoe’s death? Where would Wufei be if he committed suicide when his wife died? The list goes on and on so remember, get to know other people and enjoy life!
