The CD was released last December shortly after the release of Rurouni Kenshin OVA 4. It was supposed to be a tribute to the history of RK, a best collection of sorts. As such, it can only be most enjoyed by people that don’t own any of the 4 TV OSTs plus the OVA OST. But that doesn’t mean that old collectors can’t enjoy this. In addition to the convenience of having (almost) all the themes on one CD, there is a previously unreleased track on the CD, track 11 of disc 2, which is actually quite good. It sums up the spirit and variety of RK by having a lot of cast members on it.

Themes, of course, all suffer from the doesn’t-seem-to-be-related-to-the-show syndrome, most of them being upbeat and poppy, which is quite contrary to the somber mood the show is usually in.

The BGM selection is quite good, although some good tracks seem to be missing, like the Kaoru and Misao theme (actually, a lot of the individual character themes are missing, but then I’m just nitpicking now).

The OVA CD is quite appropriate, having all the major themes used in the OVA and drama excerpts from the high points of the show, from the hinted marriage consummation scene to Tomoe’s ill-fated death. Although the L~arc’en ciel themes, 4th Avenue Cafe and Niji, are still notably missing, all in all it’s still a good buy, even as an original Japanese import. It’s everything about Kenshin wrapped in a neat little package.

Well, that’s all for now. Be sure not to miss our next issue which is coming out sometime in mid-April. Anyway, Happy Valentines everyone and take care!!!
