Gundam Kits: The Basics on How to Make Them Look Good
continued...
This is another SD kit which turns into a samurai version
of the Gundam XX. Again, all base colors are Pylox, with the gold, red and silver parts
hand brushed. There are also some parts of the black which are hand painted, using
Tamiya flat black. The swords, however, are already foil plated so no need to paint,
they look good as is.
Hookay, this is a bit more advanced. The actual kit is a
Zaku FZ from the 1/144 0080:War in the Pocket kit series. However, do note that one has
to buy TWO kits, since the two shoulders are spiked...not a usual thing for a zaku, which
only has one spiked shoulder. The guns on the shoulders are from various Zoids kits
(which are now very bare, thanks to this), and the sword is an old heat blade from the ZZ
1/144 kit series dwadge — basically a Dom kit with desert stuff. The cape is something I
came up personally on my own, with many thanks to my grandmother for having pieces of
velvet lying around unused. There was no spray painting used on this kit. To achieve
the heavy color look, I hand brushed the whole kit in the following colors: green,
gunmetal, neutral gray and aluminum. I didn’t bother to paint the hoses, since their
color gave a good highlight to the paint scheme. I did replace the legs with some of
the rubber cable to be found in the HG Evangelion kits...unfortunately, the picture
doesn’t show this. Another thing not well seen is the fact that the hands are different;
these are taken from the dwadge kit as well, and features movable gripping fingers. This
presented an interesting problem. The original fists were ball jointed, but the dwadge
hands were stick jointed. I had to find and cut polycap joints from other kits which I
had that would fit into the stick joint and the space provided in the arm for the polycap.
Very involving, but also highly worth it. The hands were painted in green, with the
fingers painted gray. The head is not a modification. The kit comes with two heads, and I
chose the one with a Darth Vader look to it.
At the helm of Escaflowne is Shoji Kawamori, who has also contributed to the likes of Macross and Gundam.
