Welcome to Gaea: The World of Escaflowne continued... In The Beginning Vision of Escaflowne had first been conceptualized based on popular legends such as Arthurian and Atlantis, and there are several more hypotheses that several objects and terms taken and integrated into the series are actual. The whole planet of Gaea is said to be the descendants of the people who once lived on Earth in Atlantis. Atlantis was a so-called legendary civilization that thrived more than 100,000 years ago. They were said to have angered their gods with their greed and growing materialistic beliefs, and were destroyed roughly 12,000 years ago. It is said that the Bermuda Triangle was now where Atlantis once lay. The Escaflowne series takes one bigger leap into mythology. It was said that on the 13th Moon, in the new Galactic Era, the descendants of Atlantis inscribed a black monument atop what was left of the ruined Atlantis, and by doing so was able to come into the world now known as Gaea. However, the time that passes on Gaea is not necessarily the same time that passes on Earth. The Guymelefs themselves were created and built by Ispanos with Atlantean techniques. It has also been said that Escaflowne may have been taken from the word, Escavalon, a place Percival, one of the Knights of the Round Table, visits. The notion of Escaflowne acquiring a dragon counterpart and the Dragu-energists needed to empower Guymelefs may have been some sort of affiliation to dragons, popular in Arthurian legends. There has also been mentions of a continent in Gaea called Asgard, where a mysterious Mystic Valley is said to exist; a small part pf Norse Mythology. There is also a feeling of mystery and awe that surrounds the Escaflowne series, in spite of its use of Guymelef robots as its focus of power. Fate plays an important part in the lives of Gaea's inhabitants, as well as what comes of the future within tarot cards. Another factor that helped in Vision of Escaflowne's popularity is its character developments and relationships. Each character has his own strengths and weaknesses, and whether they're basking in glory or hiding in their shame, makes them all the more human to viewers. Van Fanel, the young king of Fanelia, and the pilot of the guymelef Escaflowne.
