He says “I didn’t throw away the umbrella after all”. They have coffee at a café. They talk a bit & Masashi asks her to go out with him on Sunday. He gives her his handphone number.Back in the car, Masashi thanks the chauffeur for not throwing the umbrella away.
Yukiko goes back home & thinks about the dance & Masashi. I guess she’s wondering why Masashi wants her to go out with him. The next day at work, she talks with her colleague Nakamura about Masashi. She advises Yukiko not to bother with him.
His father prefers to talk about arranging the marriage between Masashi & Kanzaki Hatsue, but Masashi asks him to meet Yukiko instead.
Yukiko receives a parcel & letter from home. Kikuo tells her that everything is fine but in actual fact they had to close the inn their parents were running due to financial difficulties. He decides to come to Tokyo to work. Their parents insist on keeping everything a secret from Yukiko.
Sasaki the chauffeur finds out about Hitomi & Kenji, & reports to Masashi. Masashi goes looking for Kenji but finds out from his roommate that Kenji had moved. Later on in the evening, Hitomi goes out looking for Kenji when she can’t find him at work. At a pachinko parlor Kenji’s ex-roommate tells Kenji that Masashi came by. Kenji seems rather annoyed with Hitomi but makes up with her.
Having arrived back in Tokyo, Kikuo starts checking the newspaper. An article about Masashi appears with a photograph. Kikuo starts scribbling on the picture & Yukiko gets a little upset. Kikuo suspects that Yukiko has fallen for Masashi & tells her that rich people are nice to people like them because they think of it as a charitable act.
Miura brings Masashi for a meeting without telling him that it was Kanzaki Hatsue that they suppose to meet. Masashi tells her outright that he’s not interested in marriage.
Yukiko & Nakamura are having lunch & they discuss Masashi. Yukiko is unsure of what to do & brings out the Masashi’s business card. Nakamura grabs the card & calls Masashi who’s in the middle of a meeting. She tells him “Yukiko already has a boyfriend” & not to mess with her & hangs up.
Hitomi & Kenji have a tiff. Who come by but Kikuo. In the process of consoling her he mentions that “love is silly, I don’t want to have anything to do with it”. Hitomi gets annoyed with his comment & challenges him if he wants to try “love”. They end up at a hotel but Kikuo backs off.
Masashi bumps into Kenji at the bottom of his apartment as he’s going home. They go upstairs to Masashi’s apartment & Masashi gives him an envelope containing money. He seems rather repulsed by the whole thing but he’s only thinking of his sister Hitomi. Masashi’s handphone rings, it’s Yukiko who’s calling to apologise for her friend Nakamura calling earlier. They chat & all of a sudden she asks “what do you think about charity?” “Huh?” Masashi’s surprised. She says “I’d like to know what you think about charity because I want to know if you treat me as if you’re doing a charitable act”. Masashi replies “no, in fact I’m the one who needs help. Something unpleasant just happened & getting your call was good…feel better”. They decide to go out on a date this Sunday…
Later on when Kikuo arrives home, he & Yukiko decide on a “sign”. If either of them wanted privacy, like bringing home a friend or something, they’d hang the red umbrella outside on the front door knob. Then the other person would know not to enter the apartment.
Hitomi finds out that Kenji had gotten money from her brother & they have a fight.
Yukiko leaves for her date with Masashi. Masashi has booked a room & tells her that he wishes her to change into another outfit before meeting his father. All the outfits are Channel & Gucci etc. He says “I hope you find something you like” & leaves her to change. Miura than comes in with a tray of jewelry & when he sees Yukiko, tells her condescendingly “Masashi wants to avoid an arranged marriage & is only using you to pretend to be is girlfriend.”
Yukiko goes down to meet Masashi. She hasn’t changed into any of the outfits telling him “I didn’t find anything I liked.” She smiles & tells him that she was once in a high-school play & “Don’t worry. If you don’t want to get married, I’ll play the part.” Before Masashi can say anything his father comes by. Yukiko is happily telling the both of them about her dreams of being an air-stewardess before & about her parents owning a little inn back in their home town. She says that just when she was thinking that Tokyo was such a cold (unfeeling) city, she met Masashi. Masashi looks like he thinks she’s really making all this up & obviously his father is not in the least bit impressed.
Masashi sends Yukiko home after & he tells her that where on earth did she come up with that story. Yukiko is a little upset but she doesn’t say anything. At the corner, Yukiko gets off & Masashi gives her a bouquet of red roses, telling her that “Next time, you won’t need to playact”. Yukiko says “Next time? You used me. You intended to use me all along. Everything I said earlier was true. I only came because I wanted to see you again…” & runs off home upset.
When she arrives home, she finds an envelope in the roses. Inside is a stack of money & she starts crying.
Kikuo after having a really hard time looking for work finally finds a job as a swim instructor. When he come home he sees the red umbrella hanging outside on the door knob. Inside Yukiko is alone, crying in the dark…
