Next evening, after Yukiko & Kikuo come back from the bath house & they’re in the apartment talking & as usual teasing & arguing with each other. Kikuo sees the red umbrella & turns serious all of a sudden. He declares a “family meeting” . He wants to know “who did you bring home last night? The umbrella was outside, which guy did you bring home?” Yukiko stammers that her colleague Nakamura came over. She likes someone but the guy doesn’t think anything of her. Kikuo then asks “then why hang the umbrella outside?” “Because she didn’t want anyone to see her cry” Yukiko answers. “Oh.” Kikuo then continues “One day if you like someone, tell me honestly. Never hide at home alone & cry, you hear?”  Yukiko just nods.

Yukiko calls Masashi’s office to ask for his bank account number. As the secretary is taking her call, Masashi overhears & tells the secretary “Transfer the call, it’s mine.” When he picks up the call she asks him directly ”what’s your account number? I want to return the money” Masashi says he wants to meet up with her…“7pm tomorrow…I’ll wait until you come.”

Miura comes in with Sasaki in tow, questioning Masashi about looking for his sister Hitomi. “If your father finds out…he said not to look for her” he says. “Masashi replies “My father only says that, at heart they are still father & daughter”.

Masashi & his father meet up with Kanzaki & his daughter Hatsue for dinner. She’s all for the marriage but Masashi’s still not interested. Hatsue says she heard that Masashi likes to go sailing & next time to bring her along….(I don’t like this woman, she appears really calculating)

Yukiko wants Kikuo to move out now that he has a job. She’s still in the dark about what happened at home & said that “If you don’t have enough money for rental deposit then I’ll ask mom” Kikuo stops her & finally tells her the truth…”Recently a hotel opened nearby & since then, business at the inn had been bad. We closed the inn. The money used to renovate the inn still hasn’t been paid. I came to Tokyo to look for a job & to send money home . So now you know”

That evening Yukiko calls home & talks to her mom, assuring her that both she & Kikuo are fine. Yukiko’s mom tells her “Even when you’re so far away, I think of you everyday. You’re different from Kikuo. You keep everything inside. If there’s anything wrong, tell me, I’ll come to Tokyo for you”
At work Yukiko is getting ready to go meet Masashi & Nakamura is tells her to just return the money & not have anything to do with him anymore. “That’s just what I intend to do” Yukiko says as she rummages in her bag. “It’s not here! The money’s not here!” she panics. She runs home & learns that Kikuo had already wired the money back home.

Masashi is waiting for her & it’s past 8. Yukiko comes running up “I’m sorry, really sorry…I used it, the money, it was used by mistake. I’m sorry, I’ll pay you back…” she keeps apologizing. Masashi says “In that case, you can’t refuse me. I’ve made arrangements for dinner.” Yukiko hesitates. “You’ve used the money right? Then just accompany me.”

Masashi takes her to a restaurant that he used to take his sister Hitomi. Yukiko keeps saying “I really intended to return the money, that’s the only reason I’m here now, nothing more” Masashi looks at her & says that “Hitomi used to say that I didn’t understand people, I look but don’t see. I’m sorry I hurt you the other day. I asked you out tonight because I wanted to apologize to you personally.”

Later they walk outside & Masashi asks “Can you give me your phone number?” Yukiko is still very apprehensive about his intentions & asks defensively “Do you asks all the girls you date for their numbers?” “No, you’re the first” “They say you have a lot of girlfriends…” “No I don’t have anyone right now” Yukiko starts saying “Why would you want to go out with someone like me? I’m nobody special…” Masashi cuts her off “Enough, you don’t have to say anymore” & tells the chauffeur to send her home, he’d take a cab. He says to Yukiko “I don’t like people who have no self-confidence or aspirations, goodnight.”

In the car the chauffeur tells her “I didn’t have the heart to throw away the red umbrella so I left it in the car. That evening, not knowing if he would get to see you, he stood there in the rain waiting for you for a long time.”

As Masashi gets out of the cab at home, the chauffeur arrives & tells him “She insisted on taking the train. She left this in the car” & hands Masashi a handkerchief. On it Yukiko had written “Matsui Yukiko” & her number…

On the way back from the bath, Kikuo finds Hitomi waiting for him on a street corner. She’s left Kenji & is hoping that she can stay the night. Just as Kikuo goes out to hang the red umbrella on the door, Yukiko arrives home & sees Hitomi. They introduce themselves & are getting to know each other when Masashi calls. Masashi hears the noise in the background & asks “what’s happening? Can you talk?” “My brother brought a friend home, sorry” & she hangs up.

Later that evening, Yukiko runs down to the public phone booth & calls Masashi. They talk…Masashi asks “Why did you say all that just now? When I’m with you I’m happy. Thanks for the handkerchief…”

At the office, Miura sees a wedding invitation on Masashi’s desk & says “Who on earth sends a wedding invitation to her ex-boyfriend?” & goes on to talk about the Kanzaki girl & Yukiko. Masashi says “When I’m with Yukiko I only feel peaceful. Do you really think I’ve forgotten “her”?” (“her” being his ex-girlfriend)

Right then Masashi gets a call saying Kenji’s downstairs looking for him. He goes down to meet Kenji & is told that Hitomi’s left him.

Masashi goes out with Yukiko & they go back to that hotdog stand. Masashi then says “Can you stay? Your brother won’t be too worried about you?” When Yukiko says no, he says “Let’s go”. They stop outside an amusement park. It’s closed & dark but he opens the gates to go in. Yukiko says “It’s closed” “It’s OK” “No, if we get found out we’ll be in trouble” Then all of a sudden, all the lights come on. Masashi says “It’s part of the Takagi group. I’ve ever been here myself…” Yukiko stares at him. “You don’t like it?” Masashi asks. “Then we’ll leave” Yukiko shakes her head hurriedly “no, no, it’s just…” Masashi holds out his hand “Well then, we’ll just enjoy ourselves.”

They go on all the rides, the merry-go-round, roller coasters etc. They walk a bit & Yukiko ends up telling Masashi all about what’s happened at home…her mom, the inn etc. They go up the revolving tower.  As they’re looking down at the beautiful night view of the city, Masashi turns to kiss Yukiko. At the last moment she turns away & says “sorry”. Masashi looks away “why are you apologizing” Yukiko replies “then, ok”  Masashi looks at her as she says “Because I like you…I really like you…” & they kiss…
