The next morning, Yukiko dresses & quietly walks pass a sleeping Masashi. She goes to the sofa to pick up her scarf, rearranges Masashi's jacket, glances at the fax invitation that his ex-girlfriend sent him & leaves before Masashi wakes up. She runs to the bus stop just in time to see her mother off "Glad I just made it in time..." "It's ok" says her mom "Kikuo didn't come back last night & didn't call either, how was your colleague?" Yukiko lies but really feels guilty. Her mom senses something & says that when she goes back, she will tell her father not to worry, that she & Takagi are just friends. The bus honks & her mother boards the bus. As the bus pulls out, Yukiko shouts "I lied! I spent the night with Takagi because I love him! I'm sorry!" but her mother is on the bus & doesn't hear...
At Kenji's apartment, Kenji tells Hitomi that he plans to restart his music career again, plans to buy a shop with the money Hitomi's brother gave him & asks her to stay with him...
Kikuo wakes up at the hotel with a hangover & has a flashback of Hitomi & Kenji together. He turns around & sees a guy next to him dressed in underpants & bra. The guy wakes up & says "Ohaiyo" & Kikuo freaks out. The guy says "It's me Sayaka, I like you..."
Back home, when Kikuo tells Yukiko about it, she says "It's gross, how can you do such a thing" Kikuo tells her "sometimes, when a man wants to forget something, he ends up doing something like this" & Yukiko thinks of the implication...
At the Maple House cafe, Yukiko apologizes for leaving without saying anything. "What did you want to tell me?" she asks. Masashi says "I've been thinking but still can't figure out what to give you, as a birthday present" He then takes out his credit card & hands it to her "Please buy something that you really like" & wishes her happy birthday. She accepts it.
Hitomi is standing at the gate leading to the Matsui apartment. Yukiko comes home & invites her in. Hitomi says she called the swimming clulb where Kikuo works but found out that he had taken the day off & is a little worried. Yukiko tells Hitomi that her brother is really serious about her & says "Dozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu." Hitomi looks pensive & says "I once told that to someone "Dozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu". My brother really loved her, even today, I don't think he has ever forgotten her." Yukiko doesn't know Hitomi is talking about Masashi...Hitomi then asks "What's with Takagi Masashi? Oh, I heard from Kikuo..." when Yukiko looks surprised. She says "He just gave me his card just now & asked me to buy whatever I liked" showing Hitomi the card. Hitomi says "Despicable, thinks he can buy someone's feelings with money & gifts!" Yukiko looks shocked. Hitomi continues "You should buy something that costs 1,000,000 yen, no 10,000,000 yen just to show him that you are angry with him, otherwise he won't understand your feelings!"
At work the next day, Yukiko tells her colleague that she doesn't understand Masashi, it's like he puts up a wall between him & everyone else...suddenly there's a call for Yukiko.
Yukiko goes to the Takagi corporation where Miura had called for her. He tells her "You should be thinking of how to back off now. There's someone else that Masashi can't forget. Besides, he's engaged to Kanzaki san. How could he possibly marry a girl like you?" He calls her some derogatory term, & she gets upset. "My name is Matsui. I'm not hoping to marry him, I know my status." & storms off in a huff.
On the way home, still furious, Yukiko walks into an expensive looking jewelry store & asks the lady there to show her the most expensive thing around. When the lady hesitates, Yukiko pulls out the Takagi credit card & says "This isn't stolen, he said I could buy whatever I wanted."
Hitomi & Kikuo are at the Maple House cafe having a drink & says "So you're still with the guy...but I won't mind, you making up with your ex-boyfriend." Hitomi says, it won't do, won't be good for Kenji. Kikuo gets upset that she's still so concerned with Kenji & tells her so. Hitomi gets upset "Can't you be a little more sympathetic? You just took someone away from him!" "One minute with him, next minute he leaves you alone, I can't stand anyone like this" replies Kikuo. Hitomi picks up her ice cream soda, dumps it on Kikuo's head & walks off.
Yukiko arrives home, sits down & then looks at the phone...
At the inn at Yukiko's hometown, Yukiko's mom is down with the flu in bed &Yukiko's dad prepares dinner. The phone rings & it's Yukiko. Yukiko's father tells Yukiko that her mom is ill but recovering. Yukiko then asks "Is there anything you want? Someone gave me a voucher for a present. I was thinking of a sweater for mom, or socks for you..." "Nothing" says her father sternly. "Since your mom came back from Tokyo, she's been worried about you." Yukiko says "I'll write. Tell mom to take care." "Her father says "Yukiko...in your letters...don't lie."
Masashi is alone in his apartment going over some papers when he gets a call from his ex-girlfriend Misaki. She says "If you can make it, please come to the sailing race next Sunday." Masashi says "Sorry, I still have work to do." "Still the same as before...haven't changed. In any case, come if you can, we all would like to meet up with you." Misaki tells him. After a slight hesitation Masashi says "Congratulations on your wedding."
Yukiko starts writing a letter to her mom & recalls what Miura told her "there's someone else that Masashi can't forget..." when Kikuo comes barging home. "Writing a letter? Let's write..." "Aren't you suppose to be with Hitomi?" she asks. Kikuo just ignores her & says "Dear mom, I met a weird girl in Tokyo..." "That's not the way to speak of someone you like." says Yukiko. "They squabble a little & Kikuo tells her "She's back with her old boyfriend...she only thinks of me as an older brother." Yukiko is stunned, goes & get her brother a beer & says "Sorry, I didn't know anything..." Kikuo gets up, grabs the red umbrella & leaves. "Where're you going?" asks Yukiko. "To play Mary Poppins" says Kikuo.
In the playground, Kikuo depressed, walks around with the opened red umbrella...
At the Maple House cafe, Yukiko returns the card to Masashi. She talks non-stop "I went to buy a lot of things the moment you gave me the card. I didn't know what to get but ended up buying some diamond earrings because I liked them. It's probably a couple of hundred thousand yen but I'm not sure, I didn't notice..." Masashi doesn't seem to notice & says "As long as you like them, it's ok" & Yukiko seems disappointed at his reaction. "Let's go for dinner" Masashi says when his handphone rings...
At the nightclub Hitomi quits. As she's going out, she has words with one of the girls there. Masashi comes barges in & the girl says "Just in time" & Hitomi asks "Why?" "Because your brother gave me money." & both girls get into a tiff. Masashi grabs Hitomi & says "Let's go home!" & she pulls away. Masashi slaps her & she's stunned. Just then, Yukiko walks in & says "Hitomi san" & Masashi turns around surprised, realizing that the 2 of them know each other.
Back at Masashi's apartment, he tells them to sit while he goes into a bedroom. Hitomi apologizes to Yukiko for not telling her that Masashi's her brother. Masashi come back with a blanket & tells her "Stay here tonight. Tomorrow we'll see dad together." Hitomi is defiant & says "I'm not going back." "How long are you going to go on like this?" Masashi ges exasperated. Yukiko interrupts & says "I think I'll go back first, excuse me." Hitomi then asks Masashi "What do you see in Yukiko?" "That has got nothing to do with you." Hitomi just continues "You're not really serious about seeing her, you're just playing with her, aren't you!" Yukiko says "Masashi has been looking for you all this while, he's serious about that so..." & leaves.
As Yukiko walks home, she recalls what Hitomi said..."I once told that to someone "Dozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu". My brother really loved her, even today, I don't think he has ever forgotten her." she recalls the fax on the sofa "I want to see you, Misaki" & runs home upset... (David Gates' "Goodbye Girl" plays in the background)
Outside her apartment, she hesitates before putting on a cheerful smile & enters. "I'm home..." & suddenly stops when she sees Kikuo sitting by the window twirling a flower. All of a sudden he gets up & starts on & on about Kenji, how he should be true to his feelings about Hitomi. Yukiko tries to interrupt & tell him that Hitomi is Masashi's sister but Kikuo just goes on about how he intends to get Hitomi back from Kenji.
Back at Masashi's apartment...Masashi asks Hitomi "Why did you just leave without a word? You could at least have kept in touch..." Hitomi replies "Because I didn't need all of you...dad, brother...all I wanted was to be with some one I loved, didn't want anything else. I don't want to live like you. You haven't forgotten about Misaki." & gets up to leave. Masashi says "She's married. It's finally over." to which Hitomi just says " You're really pitiful." & leaves.
At the office, Miura & Masashi are discussing work when Miura says in a condescending tone "Oh yes, I told that girl about your engagement so she won't have hope of marrying you." when Masashi takes offence to his tone & tells him to watch his words.
At work, Nakayama asks Yukiko about the diamond earrings & Yukiko says "I didn't buy them. I thought he'd be angry so I didn't buy them."
Yukiko goes home & writes a letter to her mother when she gets a call from Masashi. "Thanks for last night. If you hadn't been here, Hitomi & I wouldn't have been able to talk calmly. Um, is it ok to talk?" Yukiko says "Yes...ah, wait a second" & goes to put the umbrella outside on the door. "About my engagement, my father did that without consulting me. It's only work." There's a pause & Masashi continues "That night, the night of your birthday, I attended a wedding reception...that night, not just anyone would have been ok, I really wanted to be with you." "Really" asks Yukiko. "I'm not lying" replies Masashi. Yukiko confesses "I didn't use your card to buy anything. I only want the truth between us. Thank you for wanting to buy me a birthday present, & now telling me the truth, I'm really happy." Then she asks "Have you had dinner? There's a place that has delicious curry, you're always taking me out, sometimes...not possible?" "Where do I wait for you?" replies Masashi.
Masashi waits for Yukiko at that corner & she comes running by with a bag of groceries. "That delicious curry place, it's the curry I make" & with a smile they go off to Masashi's apartment & start making dinner.
Kikuo goes to Kenji's place to look for Hitomi. "She's not here, she's gone to look for work...I knew it wouldn't work out with you." Kikuo says "A real man doesn't treat some one he loves this way" & leaves.
Hitomi goes back to the nightclub & tries to get her job back...
After dinner, Yukiko & Masashi play chess...
Kikuo comes home & reads Yukiko's letter to her mother. She had written "I really like Masashi but know that he will never return my feelings...so I keep everything inside...when I'm with him I'm really happy...I know it's not possible but I have found something very precious...I have loved someone before...." Kikuo is shocked at what he's reading...
Masashi drops Yukiko at that corner & she tells him it's not that she doesn't like her brother but there are things that sometimes she cannot talk to her brother about. Masashi thanks her & as they say goodnight, Kikuo comes by. He says "I read the letter" & pushes Yukiko out of the way when she tries to stop him. She falls to ground & Masashi rushes to help her up. Kikuo looks like he's about to punch Masashi when all of a sudden he falls to the ground & begs Masashi to take care of Yukiko. Masashi asks him to get up but he doesn't. "She's not like me, she is our Matsui family's most precious treasure, don't abandon her" Yukiko is stunned. Masashi says to Kikuo "Get up. I'll treasure her. I promise, I'll treasure her." & Yukiko looks shocked. Masashi turns to Yukiko & tells her "I promise I won't hurt you. I promise I'll treasure you" as Kikuo looks on in tears...
