Early pictures of Ukiyoe

Ukiyoe is a wood block printing art created and developed during the Edo era or Tokugawa era (1603-1867). The history of Ukiyoe began with Hishikawa Moronobu (1618-1694) who discovered a way to make monochromic woodblock prints called "suzuri-e" in the 1670s.

During this period, there was one more popular ukiyoe artist, Sugimura Jihee. He also published many individual pieces of ukiyoe, such as Koshikibuno naishi, and made a great contribution to the development of ukiyoe.
