41th Station: Miya |
History |
There were many towns built around a temple/shrine called "monzen machi" in old day's Japan. "Monzen" means in front of temple/shrine, and "machi" means town. Miya was one of them. The miya district was very big. In fact, Miya station was the biggest inn district among the 53 stations on the Tokaido with the population of 10,000. There used to be a ferry to Kuwana, the next station. There were more than 250 inns and it was always crowded with visitors: some came to visit Atsuta jingu, some came to ride on ferries, and some came just for fun in the dictrict You cannot see its heyday's prosperity in the Miya district, you can still see the solemn shrine.
