Shigemasa

Kitao Shigemasa (1739-1820) was one of the leading ukiyoe artists during the ukiyoe golden age. He was born and grew up in Edo as an elder son of a bookshop family. He gave the house to his younger brother and concentrated on his ukiyoe works. He produced many ukiyoe of beautiful women, landscape, and illustrations for books. Shigemasa created the Kitao school, and he is believed to have trained many pupils, including Utamaro, Hokusai, and Santo Kyoden, one of the giants of Edo era literature. Shigemasa is also known for his haikai and shodo, calligraphy.
