Sukenobu

Nishikawa Sukenobu (1671-1751) was an ukiyoe artist as well as a book designer who was born in Kyoto and active in the Kyoto-Osaka area during the middle of the Edo era. He was famous for his beautiful women and samurai ukiyoe. He was born as the third son of a doctor's family.

Sukenobu studied yamatoe with masters of the two schools: the Kano and the Tosa. He made a debut in the picture book field with his book, Hyakunin Jorou Shinasadame (1723), and he depicted beautiful women in the various fields in the picture book. The book was pretty successful, and his name became well-known in the Edo.

He was also good at hand-drawing, and left many works, including Hashira Dokee to Bijin. His ukiyoe influenced many artists, including Okimura Masanobu, Nishimura Shigenaga, Ishikawa Toyonobu, and Suzuki Harunobu .
