Utagawa School

Utagawa-ha, or Utagawa school was established by Utagawa Toyoharu (1735-1814). It is said that Toyoharu first learned the Kano-ha (kano school) in Kyoto and later went to Edo (now Tokyo). He studied a western technique, Enkinhoo, or perspective drawing, and his ukiyoe was very popular for its exotic style. He was also good at hand-drawing women. Toyohiro and Toyokuni were his pupils, and especially, Toyokuni was very successful, and he made a great contribution to the prosperity of the Utagawa school.
