It should be clear that in this show the word "Saint" does not have the Christian connotation most familiar in the Western world. Instead, the word is used as it was in ancient Greece, where the saints were the champions of the Gods, who fought to honor and protect their patron God or Goddess. In mythology they became the bodyguards of Athena when she went about on Earth. These warriors disdained the use of any weapon other than their bodies, and excelled in all the martial arts known to the Greeks. It has been inferred that some of the current Saints are reincarnations of earlier Saints. (The Japanese word is actually "Seitoshi".) There are indications that at least some of the other Greek gods also had/have Saints. In the first SEIYA movie, Eris (Ares' sister and goddess of Discord) warriors are known as the "Ghost Saints". Geist and her proteges are also "Ghost Saints", whether they serve Eris or some other Greek god has not been made clear. |
