An Unsung Melody

Ranma sighed and looked around, the stereo was on and everyone was on the middle of the dojo, dancing. They invited everyone to come to Akane's 18th birthday, though a lot of their closer friends couldn't make it. He knew most of the people here but everyone was busy dancing that he was left alone in a corner of the room. Akane was nowhere to be seen so Ranma decided to go out for some fresh air and look for her. He stepped out into the cold night and slowly walked to the pond. To his surprise, someone was already there, sitting on a rock. Just one glance and he knew it was Akane. Ranma silently approached and stopped about two feet from her when he heard her whispering quietly. "Ranma..." Akane bowed her head and played with the water, watching it ripple under her touch. Two years have passed and slowly but surely they were getting to know each other better, yet Akane felt that they would never admit their feelings for each other. She felt so hopeless; she didn't know what to do. Their parents were running out of patience and might try anything just to get them married, but Akane knew that that would just make their relationship harder, being forced and everything when they weren't ready yet. She sighed and suddenly stopped when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked into the pond and saw Ranma's reflection, smiling softly at her. "What are you doing out here?" Ranma asked, "It's your birthday today. You should be in there, partying or something." Akane shrugged and said, "I'm just out for some air...So why aren't you dancing?" Ranma gingerly motioned Akane to come closer and whispered in her ear, "I don't know how to dance." Akane incredulously gaped at him, but before she could speak, Ranma said, "Hey, not all people know how to dance." She just smiled and said, "I'll teach you how to dance then." Ranma grinned, but before he could say anything, Akane put her finger on his mouth, "Don't say anything Ranma, no jokes, I don't feel like getting mad today." Ranma beamed and gently removed Akane's finger on his lips, holding her hand, and said, "I wasn't going to say anything like that Akane, I was going to say that I'd love to learn from you." Akane sniffed and said, "Yeah right," she said, half-heartedly, "Okay, so we'll just go with the music." The dance music from inside got louder and Akane started to move with the music, motioning Ranma to do the same. She stops herself from laughing as he tried to imitate her. After a few fruitless tries, Akane placed her hand on his shoulder and said, "Relax, you're not in a fight, Ranma. Just feel the music." The loud music from inside suddenly stopped and was replaced with a soft sweet song. An air of awkwardness suddenly arose and they found themselves shuffling their feet. After a few seconds, Ranma formally bowed in front of Akane and offered his hand, "Would you like to dance?" Akane took his hand and said, "I'd love to." Ranma awkwardly put his hands around her tiny waist as Akane wrapped her arms around his neck. They started swaying to the music and slowly, only their silent whispers were heard... "Is this how it feels?" Ranma asked gently stroking her hair. A brief silence came and then Akane answered, "I guess so, Ranma...I guess so..." "Happy birthday Akane..." Ranma whispered into her ear, rocking her to the slow rhythm of the music. They stared deeply into each other's eyes, wishing that this moment would never end. Akane rested her head on Ranma's shoulder and softly sung to him the words to the sweet melody being played. In her heart, she now understood that their feelings for each other didn't have to be said out loud to be recognized, they just had to look into each other's eyes and feel each other's presence to know that they share something special in their hearts...love.
