PLACEMENT CRITERIA

When students enter the ESL Program at Heidelberg College Japan, they are placed in appropriate ESL classes. Placement is determined by the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency which includes listening, grammar, vocabulary, and reading. HCJ levels and placement criteria are as follows:


BEGINNER (not available at Heidelberg College Japan)
Michigan Placement Test: 0-25

LOW INTERMEDIATE
Michigan Placement Test: 26-45
TOEFL: 330-420

INTERMEDIATE
Michigan Placement Test: 46-59
TOEFL: 420-460

HIGH INTERMEDIATE
Michigan Placement Test: 60-75
TOEFL: 460-500

LOW ADVANCED
Michigan Placement Test: 75-89
TOEFL: 500-540

ADVANCED
Michigan Placement Test: Over 90
TOEFL: over 540



Students are promoted to higher levels according to their placement test scores, TOEFL scores, evaluations, attendance (a minimum of 80% is required), and/or instructorsÕ recommendations. An institutional TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is given three times a year.
