Selamat Datang (Welcome) to Bonsai in Malaysia

It was evident when I was in Malaysia recently that Bonsai is strongly supported by a good number of dedicated enthusiasts, some species which are used in Malaysia for Bonsai are various Ficus species, Juniperus, Triphasia trifolia, Senai, Ehretia microphylla, Pemphis acidula and the Wrightia religiosa which is the most popular plant used for Bonsai in Malaysia. I would call this Wrightia religiosa the king of Bonsai for this region, it can be used for all styles and sizes, and is so adaptable that I saw it shown in full leaf, completely leaf trimmed, and in full bloom. In this warm tropical climate it will flower and bloom in 2 weeks if completely leaf pruned, and when flowering it is completely covered in small hanging white blooms that give off an exotic scent. I am also told that it is quite popular among the more rural towns folks to plant and grow Bonsai. There are a number of Bonsai nurseries around the country, and a number of places that sell Suiseki. Bonsai can also be found in some of the Chinese Temples in Batu Pahat (a town in Johor state). Batu Pahat (a town in Johor state).

Malaysia Bonsai and Suiseki Society
The Society has been in existence for more than 10 years & Currently has approximately 400 members from all over Malaysia. Its objective is to promote the healthy hobby of bonsai and suiseki to the general public by holding regularly events such as exhibitions, bonsai and suiseki auction dinners, workshops and bonsai tours.

The society holds bonsai workshop every Sunday from 10 am to 12 noon at its current club premise at PYRUS GARDEN, 32, Jalan Nyaman 12, Bukit Indah, Off Jalan Kelang Lama, 58200 Kuala Lumpur, with the aim of teaching the art of bonsai to those interested. The Auyin Hill Resort - Durian Tunggal, Malacca
Today Auyin has more than a dozen gardens, walls and screening trees have been aesthetically used to obscure unwanted scenery and highlight favourable views. The other delights of the feng shui garden are pathways and pavilions, bridges over beautiful oriental pools and partitioning walls with interestingly shaped windows, reminiscent of Chinese history and mythology. Unfortunately I did not see any bonsai when I was here recently (ed). The resort is located a short distance from the town of Malacca, and is open between 8 am and 8 pm

The Malaysia Agriculture Park - Selangor
The Malaysia Agriculture Park is the first and so far the only agro-forestry park in the world. The Park displays the various agricultural forms and modes used in the Malaysia against a splendid backdrop of virgin jungle. The main objective of the 1,295 hectare park is to serve as a permanent exhibition centre for the development and progress of agriculture in the country. Its beauty and uniqueness is open to the general public so that they too may savor the splendor and the wealth of the nation's agricultural heritage, and caters for a fast growing number of foreign tourists. I'm not sure if there are any Bonsai here but this photo from the park shows a shaped potted tree. Open Tuesday - Sunday 9.00 am - 5.00 pm

Chinatown - Selangor

Located at Petaling Street, is one of the city's famous souvenir hunting grounds. Similar to the Temple Street in Hong Kong or the Snake Alley in Taipei, Chinatown is brimmed with vigor and life, be it day or night. Treat yourself to the many Chinese delicacies; the roasted duck here's a hit with both local and foreign tourists. You'll never know what will catch your fancy, and if you're doing some shopping, remember to bargain.
