Remote Sensing Assignment 0
This website features information on the subject of remote sensing. A very basic definition of remote sensing is to acquire information from a distance (Campbell 2002). The remotely sensed data featured on this website, and subsequent pages, have been captured with sensors mounted on satellites. By capturing images, and thus information of the Earth's surface, different properties and characteristics of a landscape can be studied at small or at larger scales. This is extremely useful when information is needed for environmental monitoring for things such as disaster relief or crop management (Campbell 2002).
Two different remotely sensed images are examined on this site to demonstrate how images can be displayed and how they are interpreted. However, please let it be known that the source of these data is from the site GeoConnections Discovery Portal by the GeoConnections Secretariat. GeoConnections Discovery Portal is an online source for geographical data specifically for Canada. They provide access to "geospatial resources" by performing as a directory (GeoConnections 2007). The images are used from the dataset Landsat 5 TM Data over Major Canadian Cities. If curious other Canadian cites can be viewed at this site.
The images discussed on this site are of Halifax and Charlottetown. Both are capital cities of the Canadian provinces Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island respectively. The maps below show where Canada is located globally, as well as where the two cities are found within their province.

In order to chose which data you would like to learn about, please select the appropriate city name:
