Hotaru Tomoe (actually, in Japanese it would be Tomoe Hotaru) is the only child of Professor Tomoe, who could be described as your typical mad scientist father. When she was very young, Hotaru was helping her father in his lab. Unfortunately, something went wrong and blew the entire house up, killing Hotaru and her mother. Knowing that the Professor would do anything to help his beloved daughter, evil forces from another universe approached him with an offer. They would give Hotaru her life back under two conditions: the Professor must give up his soul, and Hotaru must be the "carrier" of the evil Mistress 9. Naturally, Professor Tomoe agreed, becoming a slave to the evil demon that possesed him, and making his daughter an unwilling and unknowing shell for Mistress 9.

Hotaru can be described as a very reserved and quiet person, or your regular introvert. She has very special healing abilities (she can cure any wound), which most people find strange and disgusting. Because of this, Hotaru has no friends and spends most of her time inside her father's mansion with her lamps and dolls. Partly as a trade off for her special gift, Hotaru is very weak and is easily exhausted. She is sickly pale because she stays indoors most of the time and is also too weak to get much physical exercise.

Unlike her alter-ego(?), Sailor Saturn is not at all weak. Actually, as the other senshi have even admitted, Saturn is the most powerful of all the senshi. Armed with her Silence Glaive, a long pole arm with a neat shaped hook on the end, that can cut through anything (yes, it really can cut through anything!), and her startling purple eyes, Sailor Saturn is definitely a vision of power. Also, I suppose the fact that she can destroy the world in three words might make her pretty powerful too, huh? Anyway...

One day in the park, Hotaru meets Chibi Usa, and the two quickly become friends. Unlike the rest of the kids Hotaru knows, Chibi Usa thinks that her healing powers are neat, not awful. Unfortunately, things don't stay good for long. After her long period of dormancy, Mistress 9 finally begins to awaken and forces Hotaru to eat Chibi Usa's heart crystal (sorta like a person's life source, in simple terms). After this happens, evil fully takes over, and Hotaru turns into the sultry Mistress 9, who is intent on bringing back her master, Pharoh 90, to destroy the Earth.

Now, even though Hotaru is weak, she manages to over power Mistress 9 from the inside, and with a little bit of help, Pharoh 90 is stopped just in time. As is customary, there is your regular happy ending: Professor Tomoe gets his soul and life back, the world is saved from destruction, and even though Hotaru is killed in the battle, she is reincarnated as an infant to later assist the senshi once again...
