Puertomontt ~ Santiago
(December 29, 2000)
On the last day of our stay in Puerto Varas, we went walking to the centro after breakfast. The town was getting ready for the season proper after the New Year. There were stilt walkers in the plaza and things were generally still quiet. The more fancy hotels seem to have busloads of tourists come in already. At the breakfast room we had more than 10 people in our own hotel. We had lunch in a restaurant at the centro ? they were serving California burgers. We left for the airport around noon. Jose and his son came to the hotel and came along in the back seat. After we got to the airport, Jose’s son drove our rented car back and the dad had to drive another one of their vehicles. Our flight to Santiago was on time. We arrived in Santiago, and took one of those minibuses to our Aparthotel Buenavista. They had another young couple in the van to be dropped off within the town, so we got to go through the town at 5 pm´ish. The traffic was not bad, but people seem to drive faster and closer to the other vehicles. We got into our apartment around 6 pm. I had made reservations through the Internet for $60 a night. It was a clean 11th floor apartment with a balcony view of the Andes mountains in a modern new building. The doorman was in until 10 pm and after that we had to get in with our own key to the main door. I chose the place because it was on the last subway stop in the more affluent Las Condes suburb of Santiago. And besides it was easy to make the reservation through the Internet. We had cable television, kitchen with microwave and a very modern bathroom. |
