Santiago
(December 31,2000)
On the last day of the year we ate breakfast and
went out to the subdivision called Barrio Brasil. Lonely Planet guide
describes this place as very active during holidays and containing many
brightly painted houses. We saw many such houses. The mountain
that has the virgin guadalupe on top can be accessed from this town.
The funicullar that takes people up the mountain face was not working.
So we were forced to walk up the mountain. It took the better part
of three hours. Once
on the top we got a great view of the city. We were pretty tired.
The way down was easier. Then we went home and rested. In the
evening we watched the fire works in Las Condes suburb. Against the
backdrop of the Andes mountain, the fireworks were spectacular.
