January 12, 2000 "Japanese Female Sexual Attitudes"
Well, I wasn't a part of this week's show, and after having watched it on TV, I'm glad I wasn't. I'm rather sick and tired of constantly bringing these young girls on the air, exploiting their low intelligence and portraying them as symbolic of a generation. I'll avoid discussion of how young these girls lose their virginity or how many guys they have hooked up with. I'm most concerned with the lack of precaution they take while being so sexually active. The fact is that it is the year 2000 and Japan is no longer isolated from the world. One of the unfortunate results of internationalizations has been diseases brought from overseas. Days of Japanese "purity" are over. The hard cold fact is that Japan may currently be going through an HIV epidemic and that we just don't know it yet. Japanese girls are not getting tested and symptoms often do not show up for years, let alone for other sexual transmitted diseases. Even assuming that your partner is clean, there is a little thing called pregnancy. Don't get me wrong, I am completely pro-choice, but when I heard that one girl say that she has had 3 abortions, I shuttered. Abstinence education is a joke. If kids want to have sex, they will, especially in a country with no religious morals over their shoulders. We need to acknowledge the realty of the present day and give these kids they knowledge they need to make educated sexual decisions, and I agree with Kevin that the government should do more to make condoms more accessible to the youth. Just don't expect the Monbusho Board of Education to do anything anytime soon. My former employers are a bunch of idiots and we all know it. |
