sea never changing color,
even in winter.

Jap.=原始より 藍海冬も 色変えず

Festival pathos--
when even the peep-show scopes
are basmeared with fog.

Jap.=祭あわれ のぞきの眼鏡 曇るさへ

In a load's sanctum,
I adjust the winter hood
on someone's baby.

Jap.=人の子の 頭巾なおして 天守の上

A soft little mass
of infant taking a nap,
snoozing on and on.

Jap.=やはらかき 稚児の昼寝の 続きけり

Thinking about him :
a cricket, chirping away,
looking at the ground.

Seishi

Jap.= うつむきて 鳴くこおろぎの ことおもふ

At the deepest point
of grief,somebody nearby
breaks a withered branch.

Seishi

Jap.=悲しさの 極みにたれか 枯木折る

Dig up its rice fields
and the land of Yamato
becomes new again.

Jap.=大和また 新たなる国 田を鋤けば

Here all of Japan
comes together to perform
its first pilgrimage.

Jap.=日本が ここに集まる 初詣

Ice and water,
Their difference resolved,
Are friends again.

Jap.=うちとけて 氷と水の 仲直り

Every morning
In the sky above my roof,--
Is it the same skylark?

Jap.=朝ごとに 同じひばりか 屋根の空

"My children are a burden,"--
There are no flowers for him.
