Out of Africa | Bob Newhart begins a three-episode role as an ailing architect whose gradual loss of vision touches a nerve in Lewis. Meanwhile, the rest of County is thrown off by a staggering backlog of patients; an alcoholic mother's grisly reaction to losing custody of her children; the arrival of a new nurse (Linda Cardellini); and Abby's career switch.
The Greater Good | Susan goes above and beyond the call of duty to help Ben Hollander cope with his failing vision; Pratt's actions backfire for a mother in drastically premature labor; Abby uses her surgical rotation to teach a widow about organ donation; and Kovac battles a social worker over an overmedicated teen.
Death and Taxes | Lewis's busy workload threatens to keep her from an important date with Hollander (Bob Newhart); Kovac and Corday clash over the treatment of a patient with questionable symptoms; and Sam's son spends a day underfoot at the ER. Meanwhile, Chen gets bad news from China about her parents.
Freefall | A Thanksgiving tragedy high above the ER has the County staff racing to aid the survivors and Susan fearing the worst about one of the possible casualties. Meanwhile, Abby finally finds a reason to get over Carter, who may be heading back to Chicago sooner than anyone expected.
Missing/Identity Crisis | Pratt takes a shine to Gallant's visiting sister (Joy Bryant); Neela reaches out to a pair of car-crash victims struggling with returning to their strict Amish families; and Susan races to locate the missing parents of a 5-year-old Jane Doe. Meanwhile, Sam bristles at Luka's attention to her young son.
Makemba | Flashbacks recall Carter's life — and idealistic new lover (Thandie Newton) — in Africa, as he prepares to return to Chicago for the holidays. Back at home, Pratt continues to avoid Gallant's sister; and Abby refuses to accept a peace offering from her former flame.
Touch and Go | Dr. Carter returns from Africa accompanied by a new love, Makemba (Thandie Newton); Drs. Pratt and Gallant argue over a personal matter.
nicu | Neela and Abby face their toughest rotation ever after being assigned to the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit, where a familiar face from the ER ends up needing help in the worst way.
Get Carter | Carter's girlfriend (Thandie Newton) steps on more than a few toes while spending a day observing County in action. Meanwhile, Kerry slaps Romano's name on a wing that would have him kicking and screaming; Sam gets more info on Kovac than she hoped for; Pratt's recent mistakes have a paralyzing effect on his ability to treat patients; and Lewis turns down a promotion, due to an imminent change in her lifestyle.
Impulse Control | Kerry tries to protect a mom from losing her son after a car wreck that has Abby rushing to find his sister at another ER and the driver reeling from his role in the tragedy. Meanwhile, Pratt pulls a fast one on a TB carrier who refuses treatment; Carter and Kem share her last day in Chicago mapping out their future; Sam's violent side is triggered by a patient's abusive beau; and Luka receives a sexy late-night visit from a colleague.
Blood Relations | Neela's faced with crippling claustrophobia while trapped in a hyperbaric chamber with a baby suffering from carbon-monoxide poisoning. Meanwhile, Chen (Ming-Na) returns from China with her ailing father; Kerry breaks bad news to a mother about her son's leukemia; and Sam ponders the repercussions of her night with Kovac.
Forgive and Forget | Sam's troubled by Kovac's visiting African tryst; one of County's former patients uses a tank to exact a revenge that threatens half of Chicago; Corday is charmed by a fellow surgeon; a staffer becomes a patient after suffering a heart attack.
The Student | Carter sticks up for Neela when the other attendings doubt her future in the ER. Neela caves to the pressure and accidentally gives a patient the wrong medication. Gallant takes the blame for her though. Sam and Luka try to plan Alex's birthday party. Frank visits on his way to therapy. Chen's home nurse quits after her dad behaves poorly.
Where There's Smoke | Sandy Lopez dies after going into a fire in an abandoned warehouse. Kerry is devastated; even more so when Sandy's family won't let her see Henry. Susan and a guy from Risk Management interview everybody who was involved in last week's death. Gallant reveals that the Army is sending him to Iraq and he and Neela share a bittersweet farewell. Sam is surprised by the arrival of Alex's dad. Neela passed her boards, although Abby did not. Corday discovers that she's the new Head of Surgery. After she has contractions, Susan is put on bed rest for the rest of her pregnancy--five weeks.
Just A Touch | A patient accuses Pratt of paying too much attention while giving her a breast exam. Luka seems okay with Alex's father hanging around. Abby's on her psych rotation, while Neela begins her research rotation. Chen's dad is admitted to the hospital. Weaver is granted custody of Henry for the weekend. Corday is uncomfortable when Dave and Dr. Lawson meet. Abby discovers that Carter paid her med school tuition.
Abby Normal | Still on her psych rotation, Abby treats a young mother who's having seizures caused by bad memories of her young son who died eight years earlier. Later, she takes her boards again. Weaver considers leaving town with Henry. Neela saves the life of one of her fellow researchers. Kem returns to Chicago, just in time for a Carter Foundation board meeting. Carter announces that the business will be switching focuses from arts & entertainment to medicine. His father and other board members are not pleased.
Midnight | Kem goes into labor, but she and Carter are shocked to discover that the baby has no heartbeat, and will be stillborn. 19 members of Neela's family are coming into town for her graduation. Abby, Neela and Lester graduate from medical school. Steve continues his efforts to get Sam back, visiting Luka at work and sending Sam a box of ice cream sundaes. Pratt refuses to believe that a patient of his is in congestive heart failure. Weaver suggests to Abby that she will match at County, unless she fails her boards. Rachel Greene is in town "looking at colleges," although she has a favor to ask of Corday.
Drive (season finale) | In the 10th season finale, Abby reminds a dying teacher (Bill Macy) that his was a life well-lived; a car wreck brings out Kovac's inner hero; Sam flees with Alex after Steve settles down in Chicago; Kerry has her day in court — and faces Sandy's family — over Henry; Neela heads to Michigan for her internship; mystery swirls around Chen's recent injuries; and Pratt's attempt to buddy up with a patient leaves three lives in jeopardy. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
