TSD4's new hero and main character, the ninja-esque third of the now-famous Shinjo boys is an adorable, overconfident and slightly dense teenager (anybody else having deja vu from old Eiji? ^_^) who shares his name with the game's title. Left with Eiji Shinjo by his father (who?...take a wild guess ^_~) when he was eight years old, Subaru is now Eiji's adopted little brother -- but there just may be more to their "relation" than he could expect. He was taught swordsplay by Eiji himself, naturally, and Subaru is a dedicated student, though that can't be said the same about his schoolwork habits (^_^;;). Since Eiji had disappeared a while ago and left the Shinjo clan's sword, the Byakko no Tachi, behind, Subaru is currently on a training journey around the world in pursuit of becoming the strongest fighter and hopefully finding Eiji again, in a plot eerily reminiscent of Eiji's own original one. While he is travelling, he also meets up with a kung-fu fighter named Rook Castle in America. Learning that Subaru is Eiji's student and little brother, Rook travels and trains with Subaru for a while, the two becoming fast friends. Soon after, the pair encounter a young Scottish girl named Naru Amoh, who is on a quest to find her missing foster father. She tells Subaru that her foster father Kayin was a good friend of his teacher / brother, Eiji. She also mentions to Subaru that the Toshindaibukai in which her father and his teacher had fought in is being reopened soon, and it could mean chaos for the world again. Showing off a pair of invitations to the Toshindaibukai, marked with the initial "E", the group of three young warriors, Subaru, Naru and Rook headed off to prove their worth at the Toshindaibukai, Subaru wanting to prove his suspicion about who this "E" actually is ("...are wa yahari...") -- but none of the three were prepared to face the harsh truths waiting for them ahead...and Subaru's could prove to be something more unbelievable - and horrifying - than he could ever imagine...

(it's basically a burst of light speaking to him) Subaru remembers that voice from his past, and wonders if there's any relation between him and the man speaking to him. The voice tells him that he's gotten stronger, and because he is training with the sword, he should have realized the special "fire" within him. Subaru begs him to teach him about his life, and everything he's come to experience. However, the voice (finally identified as Sho ^_^) then tells him to continue training with the sword, and someday it will tell him all the answers. As the light disappears, Subaru yells at the voice to wait and tell him what he needs to know. And in this loosely translated phrase, Subaru continues with, "if there is anything that I need to know...please tell me...father." */SPOILER*

Since her first debut in Toshinden 3, the foster daughter of Kayin Amoh (and female embodiment personality-wise ^_~) has traded in her frilly pink dress and pigtails for a pair of goggles and a kick-ass attitude, adding the first feminine flair ever to the now-standard Shinjo-Amoh duo. As for her story, apparently, after the Toshindaibukai of Toshinden 3 in 1996, Kayin left Naru at a housing institute, for reasons unknown to her. Though she kept waiting and hoping, Kayin never came back for her. As time passed, Naru began to think that the reason her father had left her in the institute was because he saw her as a burden to him. Thinking that this could never possibly be true, Naru trained herself hard with the sword Excalibur, which Kayin gave her before he left, to be able to become a master of all of his special techniques (though she was definately familiar with his fighting style already, as was proved by her in Toshinden 3) so she could prove to him that she wasn't useless to him. On her sixteenth birthday, she ran away from the institute and set out to find her father, and the true reason why he had never returned for her. After learning from Duke Rambert that Eiji Shinjo, her father's best friend, may know of Kayin's whereabouts, Naru received a pair of invitations to the infamous Toshindaibukai. Even more concerning was the fact that they were marked with the initial "E" -- and of course, no one has any clue to who this "E" is. Naru later runs into both Rook Castle, a kung-fu fighter and a fan of Eiji's, and Eiji's own student and adopted little brother, Subaru Shinjo. After telling Subaru of her father's relationship with his teacher and showing him the invitations, the three agree to form a team for the Toshindaibukai, all knowing that they can't afford to lose these battles...

Anybody familiar with Pokemon? (Um, okay, if you aren't--where have you BEEN for the past year?!?!) Think Takeshi [Brock], with nunchaku, open eyes, and a lot more brashness. Rook is your typical American player-boy, looking to be the type who falls in love every three seconds. (And does anyone else besides me just look at his name and automatically think "That's check, and checkmate!" ^_~) But he's got a secret to his past: When he was ten, he accidently witnessed the Toshindaibukai tournament [of the first game, which was in 1994]. After seeing so many fighting spirits and becoming a HUGE Eiji fan, Rook was inspired to join a school of kung fu. Training hard with his weapon of choice, the nunchaku, Rook gradually became stronger over the years. He started going downtown and challenging other strong fighters, eventually beating them all. But he met his match one day, in a young ninja girl who seemed to be fighting against her own will. It apparently wasn't all bad for him though, as even though Rook lost, he developed an instant liking for the girl. Though he is quite irked when she disappears after defeating him without even giving him so much as her name or phone number... Later, Rook runs into Subaru Shinjo, the travelling student and adopted little brother of Eiji Shinjo. The two became close friends, journeying and training together for a while. When the pair run into Kayin Amoh's adopted daughter, Naru, she tells them of the Toshindaibukai that is to soon begin, and shows them the two invitations marked with the "E" initial. Qualifying for the tournament along the way and joining with Subaru and Naru to make the ruled team of three, Rook goes to the Toshindaibukai, on a mission to prove himself as the strongest fighter in the world, and hopefully, to come across that mysterious ninja girl again.

Replacing Ellis as the new "cute and sweet" little girl of Toshinden (...kudos to anyone who knows that this also intones a super-annoying voice ^_~), as is obvious from the big heart on her dress and her little wings, Puella is an orphan with a beautiful singing voice that has a mysterious power to it, able to heal the elderly and sick. Left at a church that is used as an orphanage (run by the Gerard Foundation--oh, Daviddddddd...) when she was only an infant, Puella has since been told by the nuns there that she was brought in and left by a very beautiful blond-haired woman. When she was only three years old, she was praying at the altar of the church when an angel, "enwrapped in a bright light", came down out of the heavens and gave a magical, glowing bow to her. It turned out to be the Suzaku no Yumi, the Phoenix's Bow, one of the Four Sacred Weapons of legend. A while later, people of the "Gerard Foundation" who learned of the power of Puella's voice and magical bow and wanted to use it, attacked the orphanage that she lived in, threatening to kill everyone there with their guns. However, Puella desperately wished to protect her family, and the Suzaku no Yumi glowed in her hand. She then shot an energy arrow at the intruders, sending them away from the church. But ever since that day, it seemed that it Puella's presence was an inconvienence and a danger to the other inhabitants of the orphanage, although she was told this by the head of the church: "You have gotten stronger and it is time for you to find your own path by yourself. This fate is chosen for you by God. It's because you possess Suzaku's Bow, which will protect you willingly. This is the intention of the one who gave you the Bow." Finally, when she was sixteen and having no where else to go, Puella left on a journey to the Toshindaibukai, bumping into Fen Barefoot along the way and even meeting up with her Internet chat-buddy, Lancelot Lakeknight (whom she calls "Lan-chan" ^^). The three join as a team and are ever ready to take on the Gerard Foundation, as well as any evil that threatens the world.

Fen is a brash purple-haired kid with a pet pig named Wolfy and a cool Osaka accent (^^), but while he's usually cheery, his past isn't. He lost his parents when he was young, and living from then on with his grandfather, the two were able to make a living by fishing. One day, a strange man, wounded with a spear in hand, appeared in the forest behind their house. Fen and his grandfather tended to his wounds and helped him to get better, and Fen even managed to pick up some of the man's techniques while he was there, as the man was a strong warrior and taught the boy a few of his special moves. One year later, after the warrior had left, another strange-clothed man came to the house. He asked the grandfather if he knew the whereabouts of the man whom they had found in the forest and helped. Fen's grandfather said that he didn't know, and the man killed him for his ignorance. Vowing to do whatever it took to gain vengeance, Fen joins up and travels with Puella Marionette, forming a team with her and Lancelot to compete in the Toshindaibukai.

(Who else here just looks at Lancelot and thinks: "Okay, bishounen with a rapier and rose-related attacks in THAT outfit...? Shouldn't he be in Utena?" Plus the fact that his voice actress plays a bishounen duelist (Kaoru Miki) in Utena as well ^_~) True enough, Lancelot is a young English boy who is also a champion fencer. One trait that he highly lacks, though, is courage. Since he grew up in a sheltered family, he's pretty cowardly. Before he goes against an opponent, he looks up their data and weak spots on the Internet (^_^;;) so he can beat them. While his father had trained Lancelot how to fence, he didn't like the fact that his son was a wuss, so he sent Lance off to visit with the lord of a French castle every summer, who was a friend of their family. Yep, good ol' Duke. However, he met his match one summer, when he encountered a young girl carrying a legendary sword in the southern part of the castle. Challenging her to a fencing match, Lancelot was surprised to find that he couldn't win under the faith and strength of the girl. After her win, the girl, Naru Amoh, is told by Duke that Eiji Shinjo, her father Kayin's best friend, may know where Kayin is. Ever since then, Lancelot has admired Naru for her skills and bravery (which he pretty much lacks). Lancelot meets up with Puella (his chat room acquaintance, whom he calls "Pue-chan" ^^) and Fen to qualify for the Toshindaibukai as well, hoping to see Naru again.

...What would a Toshinden game be without some antagonists mixed into the invitees? And Genma, an ageless and emotionless assassin, is definately one. For as far back as 2000 years in China, Genma has been a dark storyteller of a Chinese assassin clan, as well as being an intense researcher of sorcery. After a long time, Genma mastered the dark magics of legend, but in doing so also eliminated all emotions within him. Since he no longer had a conscience, he began to kidnap children and trained them (brainwashed?) as evil murderers to do his bidding. He also managed to corrupt the ninja girl Miyabi, whom he placed a spell on that rewrote all of her original memories. However, one day Genma knocked off the owner of a very powerful shield. The relic, which was better known as Genbu no Tate, the Snake's Shield and one of the Four Sacred Weapons, gave off a great power. Learning that there are three other weapons that will give spiritual power when assembled, Genma decides he has to have the power for himself. For Miyabi, the first kunoichi [lady ninja] of Toshinden, it's the Sofia syndrome all over again. (Right down the bustiness and the skin-tight costume, as you can see in the picture to your right) As she is a descendant of a ninja clan, Miyabi has received ninja training and became a top-notch warrior with her huge shuriken blade. However, she didn't know that the dark sorcerer Genma was keeping a close eye on her. Kidnapping her, Genma cast a spell on her mind, patterning an untrue copy of her past on her, claiming that she has been an orphan since she was born in Hong Kong and that he had raised her as a ninja since she was a child. Having lost her past with hardly any will of her own, Miyabi becomes Genma's underling from then on, following his every command. When they were in America, Genma orders Miyabi to test her skills in street fights downtown, and she battled against a man known as Rook Castle. Miyabi is surprised by his skill, even though she managed to overcome him. But she then disappeared, though after she started to keep track with what Rook was up to, as she felt that it was destiny that they should encounter each other. Conscienceless and emotionless, created to be a machine of war, he is a pilot in the Cuban army instead. But one day, he is given mysterious orders to obey the sorcerer Genma and enter the Toshindaibukai as a part of his team. Although the person who gave him these orders is unknown, he also says that if Genma should manage to gather all of the Four Sacred Weapons, Bang-Boo must eliminate him and his threat. Since he was the winner of the last Toshindaibukai, Eiji takes up the position of Master of the Gerard Foundation, in order to use the powers of the zaidan for keeping peace and to use its resources to find out more about the weapons. But one day, Eiji is shocked to hear of someone evil who is searching for the weapons as well, for the destruction of the world. Eiji hosts the new Toshindaibukai, hoping to get ahold of the weapons before this opposition does. And hopefully, he will be able to take out the evil once and for all. But can the hero of the past repeat his victory and maintain the peace he's worked so hard for, or will he be corrupted like all others involved with the organization? It also says that he wanted to seek out the person amongst the participants who knows the weapons' secret and intends to use the weapons' powers for evil purposes. Eiji replies that it is a shame, but that person wasn't at the tournament. Toshin then tells Eiji that he has to continue to fight no matter what, for it is his destiny. "My destiny..." Bringing back memories of Uranus (though this one is more of a love-and-peace kind of girl) is the angelic-winged, Leia-haired Eos, who is the biotechnologically-produced masterpiece of the Gerard Foundation. An incredibly powerful warrior, Eos could predict every move of her opponents, thus making her unmatched at fighting. (Plus, somewhat like Master, she never opens her eyes) However, this strange power frightened the members of the original Gerard Foundation, including the Shitennou [Uranus, Gaia, Cupido and Chaos] and the Master himself. With the help of the Master's powers, Uranus sealed off Eos' power to keep it from being released again and disrupting their plans. Years later, Eos is met by a man named Eiji Shinjo, who had just become the new Master of the Gerard Foundation, thanks to the original Master's disappearance. Requesting that she release her powers to help him in his fight against an unknown evil, Eos managed to break Uranus' seal and pledges loyalty to Eiji as her new Master. Eiji gives Eos the Seiryu no Yari, the Blue Dragon Spear and one of the powerful Four Sacred Weapons, which changes its shape into a beautiful jewelled rod. (Rumour has it that it changes shape according to owner, though it's unknown just HOW Eiji got the spear away from Mondo...I have a hunch though, and it's not pretty O_O) Eos joins onto Eiji's team as one of the executives of the Foundation, planning to vanquish the approaching evil and return order and peace to the world.

While he is searching madly for them, he hears of a new Toshindaibukai opening, with Eiji, the new Master of the Gerard Foundation, hosting it.
