Guided by the planey Earth, Darien is the love interest of Serena, though he briefly dated Raye early in Sailor Moon. At first he and Serena fought like kindergartners, but when she finds out that Darien is Tuxedo Mask, she becomes more serious and stronger in will, mainly because when she finds out, Queen Beryl takes Darien to the Dark Side. Darien had forgotten his past as a child due to a car accident he was involved in with his parents, who died. He also had a reoccurring dream involvingTuxedo Mask and the Moon Princess. After recovering one of the rainbow crystals, he found out he IS Tuxedo Mask. He competed the senshi and the Dark Kingdom to recover all seven rainbow crystals to find out who he was.

When the Dark Kingdom took Darien, Queen Beryl erased all of his memories and used him as Prince Darien and Tuxedo Mask to fight against the Senshi. Later Sailor Moon won him back to the good side, only to have him taken away again. In the last episode of Sailor Moon (1st season), Sailor Moon won him back getting him to touch the star locket. The locket made him regain all his memories and Sailor Moon defeated in Queen Beryl.

In the second season, Darien had lost his memories of the battle with Queen Beryl, the Moon Princess, and Sailor Moon. He was just a normal teenager with a job, and being chased by girls. Though he didn't fight with the senshi, the spirit of what remained of memories, The Moonlight Knight fought in Tuxedo Mask's place. Later when Alan and Anne were feeding Serena and Darien to the Doom Tree, Darien was hurt very badly and the Moonlight Knight revealed his identity to Sailor Moon. It was then that Darien recovered his memory.

In the second half of the season, Darien and Serena were a very happy couple, until Rini showed up. She practically took Darien away from Serena by hanging around him a lot. Darien started having painful visions and dreams that forced him to break up with Serena. The dreams turned out to be King Endymion, Darien's future self from 30th century Crystal Tokyo, warning him that he and Serena should not be close. Not too long later, Serena had the same dream, so she talked to Darien about it. Darien still didn't want to risk it but after a battle against the nega-moon, Sailor Moon ran after Tuxedo Mask and he realized that she does love him no matter what happens to her. After Sailor Moon defeated the Wise Man and the Dark Moon, Rini was reunited with her parents, Neo King Endymion and Neo Queen Serenity.

Darien becomes Tuxedo Mask, dressed in a cape, tuxedo, top hat, and a cane. He uses the cane as a shield and throws red roses for his weapons. He can also use his cane as a sword. The evil Tuxedo Mask used black roses. As the Moonlight Knight, he is dressed in Arabic style clothing like a sheik. He has a white cape, turbon, and mask, and throws a white rose.
