THE THIRD NOBLE TRUTH

The Cessation of Suffering, Nirvana

The Third Noble Truth is that there is liberation and freedom from the continuity of suffering. It is the cessation of suffering, which is Nirvana in Sanskrit form.

What exactly is Nirvana?

Volumes have been written in reply to this simple question; all these answers have only confused the issue rather that clarified it. The only reasonable reply is that it can never be answered completely and satisfactorily in words. Language is created and used by human beings to express thing and ideas experienced by our senses. A superabundance experience like Nirvana is not of such category. Therefore, there cannot be words to express that experience.

Story of the fish and the tortoise:

One day, the tortoise told his friend the fish that he just returned to the lake after a walk on the land. 'Of course', the fish says, 'You means swimming. ' The tortoise tried to explain that one could not SWIM on the land, that it was solid, and that one walked on it. But the fish insisted that there could be nothing like it, that it must be liquid like his lake, with waves, and one swims in it. This misunderstanding happens because the fish has no words in his vocabulary to express the nature of the solid land!

Nirvana literally expressed:

nevertheless, we cannot do without language. We usually use negative terms to express Nirvana, so we are less likely to grasp the word and miss the meanings.

In the sutras, Nirvana is commonly referred to as:

  • "Unborn", "ungrown", "Unconditioned";
  • "Extinction of desire, hatred and illusion";
  • "Cessation of continuity and becoming"'
  • "Calming of conditioned things, extinction of all defilement, cessation of craving…etc.

We have heard and read so much, but Nirvana is beyond words, logic and reasoning. Just as a kid in kindergarten should not quarrel about the theory of quantum physics. Instead, if he follows his studies patiently and diligently, one day he may understand it.

Important Tips !!!

Nirvana is to be realized by the wise within themselves. If we follow the Path patiently, train and purify ourselves earnestly, we will one day realize it within ourselves!
