Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu

In Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu, the pace of sword skills is exetremely fast. The skills can be devided into four main parts. There are different names of skills in each part. The first part is called "Ran-Geki-Jutsu", which means wield the sword to attack sequentially in once. Skills belong to "Ran-Geki-Jutsu" are:

Ryu-Kan-Sen, Do-Ryu-Sen, and Ryu-Sou-Sen.

The second part is called "Totsu-Shin-Jutsu", it means to attack immediately and just wield the sword once. Skills of this part are:

Ryu-Tsui-Sen, Ryu-Kan-Sen*Tsumuji, and Ryu-Sho-Sen. (Tsumuji=Gyrate)

The third part is called "Batto-Jutsu", I think everybody is familiar with this skill. ^_^x Certainly it is the skill to attack by drawing the sword. (Not the "drawing" in art class. ^_^ ) Names are:

Hi-Ryu-Sen, Sou-Ryu-Sen, and Sou-Ryu-Sen*Igazuchi. (Igazuchi=Thunder)

The last part is the most important & powerful skill in which the master can be killed while passing on this skill to the student.

Ouki Ama-Kakeru-Ryu-no-hirameki (Ouki=profoundness?).

Before passing on this skill, Hiko Seijuro showed another skill to Kenshin called "Ku-Zu-Ryu-Sen." It's to hit with the sword nine times from nine different directions at once. There is no way for the enemy to defend.

In each generation heritage of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu, the master always killed by the student (next inheritor) after passing on the profoundness & most powerful skill. It's the tragic fate of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu.

~~The sword is a lethal weapon, the sword skill is the skill of killing, no matter how beautiful the words you use to call it, killing is still the fact.~~ -Himura Kenshin

SWORDS IN GENERAL

We all know that Kenshin uses a Sakabato - a reverse Katana blade - as his sword of choice. Since Sakabato swords are pretty rare, and they're Katana swords with a reversed blade, I thought I'd provide some additional information on Japanese Katana swords. If you're interested, please read on! ^_-x (besides, most killing characters in RK use katana swords - Saitoh, Shishio, Soujiro for examples… ^_-x)

 Katana: Japanese Sword

(Just for fun, click here to hear a sword being drawn from its sheath.)

Katana swords are the traditional weapon of Japanese Samurai. They're probably the most famous Japanese weapons, and are even called 'the soul of the samurai'. Katana are distinguished from broadswords for the extremely sharp edge and the slightly curved blade. The beauty of a katana appears on its blade and edge. Its graceful form and grim beauty has been fascinating many warriors. The short sword was called a wakizashi and was worn with the katana to form a "daisho" or matched set of long and short swords. Both swords were worn through the belt edge up. The "Tachi" was the long sword (longer than the katana) that was the predecessor to the katana. They were usually 80 centimeters long with a deep curve and were worn suspended from the belt by cords edge down.

Relative sizes:

tanto (knife): 11 to 15 inches

tachi: 30 inches and over

katana: 26-30 inches

wakizashi: 16 to 23 inches

(Thanx Himura Kenshin for this info!!)

Note: Kenshin's sword is a Sakaba, which is basically a reversed Katana, but fighting with it is more difficult than with a Katana because the sword is duller on the edge that goes forward, therefore slower. The aerodynamics of a Sakaba are different than that of a Katana.

Umm… that's all the info I could find on Japanese swords and Samurai so far… however, I do have a few sources that can tell me more about Japanese swords, so I'll be putting up more info on swords and Samurai every so often. ^_-x

Here's a good page about the times that Kenshin was living in. ^_-x (this is from 'Sojiro's homepage'!)

Always thought Kenshin is a true samurai? Well, go here and be proven wrong! (it's not that surprising, really) Now we'll have to call Kenshin a master swordsman instead of samurai… ^_-x'

Go back to the main page! ^_^x
