A small collection of Haiku, Tanka, Cinquain, and Diamante poems by AngelMercury
This was something we had to do for English class when we studied Poetry, and then I loved it and kept on going. ^_^ Let me explain: Haiku is a Japanese form of poem, usually about nature, consiting of 5, then 7, then 5 syllables in 3 lines. Tanka is also a Japanese form of poem, usually about/including seasons of the year, written in 5, 7, 5, 7, 7 syllables in 5 lines. A Cinquain is a sort of English form of Haiku, consisting of 2, 4, 6, 8, 2 syllables in 5 lines. A Diamante is basically a contrast poem shaped like a diamond. These are all 'formula' poems, and I tried to write according to these rules. Well, here they are!
HAIKU POEMS:
"Rain" (March 8, 1999)
Tears of the sky
Tell of joy and sadness
to open souls.
"Sea Gift" (March 8, 1999)
I find on the shore
A plastic rose - memory,
A promise unkept.
(August 5 1999)
Cat on the window.
At home, warm, a light shining.
Looking for a friend.
"The Moon" (August 5 1999)
Through the heartless clouds
A face in the sky - my friend,
Your light warms my soul.
SEASONAL HAIKU POEMS:
AUTUMN
(Sept. 25, 1999)
Autumn leaves falling
Like memories of summer -
So bright their colors.
(Sept. 25, 1999)
The thunderstorm dressed
Trees in diamond raindrops for
A golden sunset.
(Oct. 9, 1999)
Sad raindrops falling
Onto golden, crimson leaves.
Remember summer!
(Oct. 9, 1999)
Summer is aging,
And the silver of her hair
Flutters in the wind.
(this one is about how, in the end of summer, little spiders move into new areas by flying on their spider-webs. It looks like silver threads are everywhere, it's beautiful.)
***NEW!!!***
Autumn. Trees bloom -
Mother Nature's painting with
Warm rainbow colours.
***NEW!!!***
The leaves are falling
Like goodbye letters from birds.
Summer has ended.
***NEW!!!***
When the last leaf falls,
Snow cleans Nature's studio
For a new painting.
WINTER:
(Jan. 19, 2000)
Wind whispering with
Elf voices, carrying stars,
Sparkling, to the ground.
(Jan. 19, 2000)
Sparkling white fairies
Dancing to unheard music
In the winter breeze.
(Feb. 18, 2000) ***NEW!!!***
The moon gazes down,
and glittering snow smiles back.
This is her season.
(Feb. 18, 2000) ***NEW!!!***
Bare tree branches
Rise to the crisp blue sky - like
Frozen fireworks.
SPRING:
***NEW!!!***
Raindrops in the spring
Kiss the shy, young flowers - a
Promise of beauty.
***NEW!!!***
A nightingale sings
Love songs to the moon - that's why
She smiles so brightly.
***NEW!!!***
(another take on the above theme)
The bright moon smiles at
The singing nightingale - her
Secret admirer.
Tanka: "Winter" (March 8, 1999)
Winter's freezing wind,
Abandoning the cold hills,
Tells of souls lost.
Sometimes I think I hear the
wailing of its own soul.
Cinquain: "Missing Things" (March 8, 1999)
I'd miss
So many things
if I don't think to look
at the ever-changing trees. So
I do.
DIAMANTES:
Diamante: (March 10, 1999)
Birds -
joyful, friendly
winged, wandering, singing
color, feather - green, cold
leaping, babbling, wondering
sad, isolated
Frogs.
Pencil -
new, sharp
writing, creating, perfecting
art, story - nonexistent, paper
destroying, wiping, disappearing
clean, bare
eraser.
