Sendai Hill. He remembered
this to be his mission for Her Highness, Queen Beryl. The night had
been silent and the moon lighted the steps with a silver hue. It
wasn’t the silence or the dark of the night that made the place seem eerie
to him. It was the images in his head that bothered him as he walked.
A bus… students in a skirmish … Her Highness, Queen Beryl … and fire!
Why were the flames against
him? This region of the surface world was surely helping him get his memories
back. It had been easy. That was why he was here in the first
place. All he had to do was to go to wherever his intuition would lead
him. History will retrace steps on its own. And here he is now –
going towards the same place where she has gone.
Rei had not been aware that
it was already the eleventh hour of the night. The flames did not
seem to be weak from warranting her meditation since it still illuminated
the room with such brilliance. She tried many times to find out the
intruder’s characteristics and after many times, she was still at a loss
of who he is.
This would be the last,
she said to herself. She would have to summon her strength again
tomorrow and try again. Wait… why was she thinking she’d have to
try again tomorrow? Her impatience had in fact, caused her to sleep
late.
The moment lingered for
her to finish her final chants and suddenly, she felt the power from the
fire. Blazing mightily in the flames was the figure of her mysterious
intruder. Nothing else was revealed. The feeling inside her
was not of disappointment, though, but of caution. She ran immediately
to the exit. Only the faint picture of the intruder was left in her memory.
He is near. That would be enough to search for him.
Jadeite had surveyed the
totality of Hikawa Jinja and became disappointed at the outcome.
There was nothing familiar here. He had seen the props and figures
around the shrine but nothing amazed him at all. The only thing that
bothered him was the images that keep playing in his head.
However, he felt a presence
coming. Jadeite was expeditious in getting out of their view. He had found
a place among the trees. This was safe and good. He could be able to see
the company without himself being seen. Quickly, he took the black
mask he had hidden in his garments. This had been Zoisite’s idea.
It would be better to roam the surface world unrecognized until they recover
their past… for now.
Rei emerged out of the building,
running and unaware that she was being watched. She stopped to survey
the grounds and found it empty. Nothing. Only the usual sounds of
the night and the light of the moon glistening over the trees. But the
force had been clear and she would not accept that she wouldn’t respond
to it. So she was willing to try again and began to walk cautiously
trying to look for whomever unpleasant.
In the meantime, her unconscious
wandering did produce something fruitful. At least to Jadeite who
stood in awe in his hiding place. She had caught his attention again with
the knowledge that he would always find her here, being the mistress of
the shrine. The silver mist of the moon revealed the purple highlights
in her hair. She walked with the air of dignity and refinement, and
yet even steadily graceful as she moved. But it was too soon to tell.
He had only seen her at a relatively far pace and yet he found himself
instantly curious about her.
Why is she going farther?
It was difficult to squirm in this position just to get a firm hold of
his sight of her. She was moving away from view!
Just as she was moving,
Rei felt a sensation from behind her. Without any command, her two
ravens flew and made a sharp sound. She ran immediately towards where
they were going and felt the strong force that made her step out into the
night.
Jadeite fastened his mask
tight and was alarmed by the discovery. Phobos and Deimos shrill
cry didn’t halt until they landed on the ground in front of their stranger
and soon enough, he heard the furious tap of her sandals going towards
his place. It will be the first time since he had set foot here.
Now he should make good the discovery.
“Dare desu ka?”
she called aloud to the shadows. “Who are you?”
Just as he vowed, the intruder
made good his entrance by presenting himself to her in the same way that
she saw in the fire. He walked slowly towards her and both Phobos and Deimos
flew out of his way and towards their mistress. His cape swayed magnificently
with the wind. He walked with such regal bearing. She could
only tell what the light of the moon revealed – her intruder had medium
built and golden hair. She recognized him as the figure from her meditation
by the fire. And why is she now fascinated about someone whose eyes
she can never see having covered by that black mask of his?
“Who are you?” Rei
was trying to sound indignant.
All this trouble of being
discovered was worth it! Her fierce, sharp eyes looked at him in anger.
The loveliest stare of hostility that was ever cast on him. How dare
she make her judgment when she didn’t even know he is?
“Who are you and why are
you here?” she asked angrily for the third time.
“I-I…” Jadeite stammered,
having only gained the composure to speak to her now. “I can’t tell
you for now… but I assure you I have no intention of harming you.”
“Did any Metal Knight send
you?” she asked, getting into her battle stance.
“No.”
“Are you from another star
or another galaxy?” She was stunned at her own far-off question.
“No,” he answered.
“I promise you that I am not planning anything—“
“You re hiding something.
Why do you have to appear to me wearing a mask?”
“Huh?”
“Take off your mask!”
Jadeite swallowed hard at
her request. He shook his head and calmly answered, “Gomen nasai.”
Rei realized that the stranger
would not cooperate, but as he was the intruder who appeared in her meditation,
there was no way that she would condone his coming here. The vision
of darkness marked the beginning of the new battle and the secret he holds
warrants her suspicion. “I’ll have to take it myself,” she told him.
That was close, Jadeite
thought, after he had successfully evaded her attack. The blows from
her hand had been swift but he was swifter. He gave her the added
handicap of difficulty having to deliver her punches while moving in her
long robes. Still, he was impressed with her skill even when he was
easily dodging her attacks.
And Rei would not admit
that she was having difficulty to inflict any slight damage on him.
The thought of shouting her henshin phrase did occur to her at the
start of the challenge, but how could she? When the intruder could
be a far greater enemy than Galaxia, of whose great power she had witnessed
for herself. The intruder’s knowledge of her identity would be more
alarming.
The many attacks she gave
prompted Jadeite to leap to a higher position. He was now standing
onto a shrine guardian statue. And he, looking down at her said politely,
“I have not come to fight.”
“Why did you come to trespass
here?” she continued to ask.
Trespass? He
came here to remember. Jadeite was slightly hurt at the allegation.
“I have no choice,” she
murmured and raised her right hand to call on the power of Mars.
Jadeite’s eyes widened.
She is going to scream and that would be the end of him! Quickly,
he leapt towards where she stood and placed his hand over her lips before
she could utter a word. “Onegai…” he whispered. “Please
don’t shout….”
Shout? But I wasn’t—
Her eyes tried to ask having no choice except be silenced by him.
His other hand wrapped her wrist firmly and she knew better than to wrestle
away from his grasp.
“Onegai…”
She heard his assuring whisper,
but she continued to exhibit a serious glance at him lest he would think
that she was gullible enough to fall for that false charisma of his. Even
if she felt the sincerity in his touch, her reason denied it. She
denied it repeatedly. He is a stranger and her glare of distrust
would be all the he’s going to receive.
“I’m sorry,” he apologized
to her, removing his hand from her lips. He was thankful that she didn’t
proceed to shout, though unknowingly, this had not been her intention.
Only a haughty aggressor would look at him with such disdain without even
trying to understand who he really was. Surely he had not encountered
such irate women like her in his lifetime! Not anyone that struck
him with such awe that he was unable to speak… not anyone so beautiful…
Not anyone like her.
“You are planning anything…?”
she tried to ask. His face had been so near that she was able to see the
soul in his comely eyes. And a man-made evil lies there!
“No…”
“Then?”
“I promise I’ll tell you
when the time is right,” he told her.
Except for the surprise
in her eyes, nothing had stopped Jadeite from putting his lips to hers.
He loosed the firm grasp from her wrist and gently held her chin.
The strangest feeling of serenity had come over him and an unavoidable
sentiment of ease had been hers, although she remained stunned and he apparently
wasn't able to feel her hand's ineffectual push on his chest.
“I will return and I promise
to tell you everything after everything is fixed,” he promised her after
ending what he had started.
Rei had been too possessed
of the moment to speak. Apparently stunned of what he had just done.
He looked at her for one
last time and put his hand on his chest. There was nothing else to
say to her, although he had wished he had the luxury to stall time.
The breeze became fiercer at the command of his aura and she saw him wrap
himself magnificently in brilliant light.
He said he would return.
This was the intruder’s goodbye. Who is he? Didn’t she try
to ask the question three times? There were more questions that had
entered in her mind. She knew for sure there was something else hidden
in him than what his handsome exterior would reveal. Maybe a man-made
devil that lurked in him still? An enemy? Because why would a simple
kiss provoke such unfamiliar images to enter her head?
