This Update's Special: Prelude to the Outer Senshi
A Powerful Set of Fighters (Part 1 of 5)
They were reawakened at a later time, and for a specific mission. What is amazing about their story is that they hadn't known at first that what they had sought was actually within them, and the Messiah they thought, was actually one of them. Nevertheless, the first time they came, their encounters with the Inner Senshi are filled with mystery and hostility.
In the anime, their mission was to get the three talisman and the Holy Grail before the Dark Messiah, or else it will lead to the Silence, the Destruction of the entire Earth. Their dedication to this mission is so much that Sailoruranus and Sailorneptune made a pact to do this, even with the other's death. What they didn't know was that the talisman was actually found within them, and in an endearing episode where Sailoruranus and Sailorneptune's heart crystal was taken to reveal the talismans. However, with Sailorpluto's help, the talismans were separated from the heart crystals so the two other senshi could live.
In the manga, however, there was no search for the talismans as the Outer Senshi already had the magical items with them. They only wished to prevent the Silence, by preventing the awakening of the Senshi of Creation and Destruction, Sailorsaturn.
The three talismans were actually: a sword, a mirror, and the orb. Their concept could actually be traced to Japanese mythology, in which the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami (of whom the early emperors of Japan claimed descent from) left the same three items.
Once the talismans have been found, the Outer Senshi have explained that their powers were greater from that of the Inner Senshi. In the next episodes, the Silent Messiah was found to be one of them as well, as Mistress 9 was residing inside Sailorsaturn in order to awaken the powerful Pharaoh 90. However, the Messiah (Sailormoon, of course....) could not have defeated the enemy without the help of the Inner senshi as everyone contributed their powers to her along with Sailoruranus and Sailorneptune. As Sailormoon has said herself earlier, "We are the same sailor senshi."
Hino Rei was the first Inner senshi to have known of this Outer Senshi secret, having seen the face of the Silent Messiah herself and the outcome of the Silence.
The collective effort that Sailormoon wished of both Inner Senshi and Outer Senshi was already fulfilled. In the battle against Neherenia, all of the senshi were there in order to fight for the Moon Princess. In this first arc of Sailorstars, the Inner Senshi were, in a twist of fate, paired with the Outer Senshi. Sailormars, for example, fought alongside Sailorneptune.
Although the fighting styles of the Inner Senshi differed with that of the Outer Senshi, their combined force has given them a great victory.
As the Inner Senshi are very close to each other, the Outer Senshi have developed a deep bond with each other at a later time. When Hotaru changed into a younger child, all of them then lived in the Tomoe mansion. And all of them cared for the young Hotaru. It was as if she had brought them all closer to each other.
