This Update's Special: Tomoe Hotaru, Sailorsaturn
Anti-Messiah and Senshi (Part 4 of 5)
Even though she didn't appear a lot during the series, it was sure that when Sailorsaturn appears, her entrance would always be astounding. In season S, we see a small girl with chin-length hair struggling to catch her breath in the darkness. Her eyes sparkled devilishly. Later, after the part where Chibiusa becomes Hotaru's friend, her "Papa" is found to be the diabolical Professor Tomoe himself, the one person behind the release of the daimon (monster) eggs.
Actually, Hotaru is surrounded by many other
mysterious people. Her father, Professor Tomoe seems to be mild-mannered at first but breaks down to his "deranged" mood whenever he is in the lab. Kaolinite, Professor Tomoe's lovely assistant, lives in their house, too. In the anime, Kaolinite likes to check on Hotaru and even tease her a lot, but Kaolinite is quite different in the manga. It seems that in the manga, Kaolinite is more patient and motherly towards Hotaru and Hotaru, like in the anime, is irritated at her.
Well, Hotaru seems to carry on a sad story. The manga even shows little Hotaru calling for her Mama and explains more about her mother's death. The manga is more complicated about her story, though. It explicitly shows little wires connected to her body since she was hurt badly at the lab accident when she was young. In the anime, it shows the explosion that happened at the Professor Tomoe's lab. Little Hotaru was looking through the glass windows when it
happened. So much grief came over Professor Tomoe. The event was even reported in the
newspapers. For both anime and manga, this was the reason for the events that will come.
Mistress 9 and the Death Busters were an integral part of Hotaru's life. Mistress 9 remained within Hotaru and used her body. Actually, this had been Tomoe's last resort in order to save his daughter's life, even if Mistress 9 was evil. Of course, the evil that entered her was a very powerful one with the purpose of destruction, the one that Sailoruranus, Sailorneptune and Sailorpluto feared--the Silence. Mistress 9 had, however, possessed the body of Sailorsaturn, the
senshi who had the power to destroy an entire planet. This makes Hotaru's story a very rich and intriguing one. The mysterious child has ties with both the Anti-Messiah and the Messiah. In an S episode, this remarkable irony is shown wherein the sign of Saturn appears on Hotaru's forehead, and later, her eyes shine with purple glow because that is how Mistress 9 manifests herself.
Hino Rei's relationship with Saturn is that she saw the face of the anti-Messiah herself in her dream, surrounded by the Silence and the tarot card of Death. Rei didn't understand fully what this all meant but she already saw the Anti-Messiah from the start.
As always, the ending will be a happy one but for Sailorsaturn, a very powerful ending. The ending is different in the manga because it is shown that Sailormoon defeats Tomoe (after he turns into a monster). In the manga, Professor Tomoe still holds on to baby Hotaru, who has a new life after the defeat of the villains Pharaoh 90 and Mistress 9.
Sailorsaturn goes on to fight with the rest of the senshi as she is destined to be. In the anime Sailorstars, she even goes against Neherenia herself, almost completing her most powerful attack to destroy the world. When she holds her glaive, her power is very great. (However, Chibiusa intervenes in that episode and Neherenia takes the glaive away from Saturn and captures her.)
Hotaru has always been one of the very interesting characters. She is mysterious, thoughtful and yet she is very powerful. There are a lot of things she can be capable of, most especially, that of being a caring daughter, a wonderful friend, and a courageous soldier.
