This Update's Special: Hino Rei's family
Special relations!
Hino Rei gives a angry glance at her grandfather. And for a good reason, too. Being very ecchi, her grandfather is very fond of young and beautiful girls. Because of this, a lot of girls are wary of going to Hikawa Jinja.
She scolds the old man, unnamed until the end of the series, but who Rei-chan politely calls ojii-chan. But ojii-san would not listen. At one time, during the second season of the series, he was even featured in a magazine. Not for good reasons, but just to warn girls that there is an ecchi ojii-san in Hikawa Jinja.
But ojii-chan proves to be strong. He is one of the seven youmas who hold the smaller gems for the Silver Crystal. And even managed to release back an energy against one of the generals.
Grandpa became a youma. The seven youmas were gifted with extraordinary talents and Rei's ojii-chan was talented with martial arts and an extraordinary energy. So with this gift, ojii-chan tried to establish Protect Este, a school for women who want to study how to protect themselves...and still maintain their elegance. (Of course, we know that ojii-chan wanted this to have more young girls go into the Shrine.) And his ecchi behavior led him to choose the villain Cooan than his trusted aide, Yuuichirou.
But as Grandpa realizes that he made the wrong choice, his granddaughter suffers the youma's blows even if she was angry at his choice. "You are my only ojii-chan," Rei says. It touched his heart that his granddaughter cared and he pushes her to block the youma's attacks. Sailormars defeats Cooan in this battle, for her ojii-chan's sake.
Rei's ojii-chan is very funny, indeed. But the old Shinto priest does not like Yuuichirou for his granddaughter. Even if Yuuichirou dangled from trees as he asked and even if it was Yuuichirou who was responsible for bringing all the girls to Protect Este. When Rei kissed Yuuichirou, Grandpa and Usagi stood in shock. And he chased
the lad with a broom! He thought, in season Super S, that Mamoru would be a fine lad for Rei. But it is also in this episode that Rei told Usagi that she (Rei) doesn't want Mamoru anymore. ^_^
But in all these cases, we learn that the hot-tempered Hino Rei is very much aggressive fighting for the people she cares for. When she fought against the youma, she said that it was for her ojii-chan. When she fought against Kaolinite's daimon, she said it was for her Yuuichirou. And she also fought earnestly protecting Usagi.
But Hino Rei's ojii-san is different in the manga. He is still unnamed and is rarely mentioned. He took care of her when her mother died when she was young. Probably not ecchi by the way he looks and the way he acts. He seems to be mild-mannered, but he did ask Rei's "cute" friends if they want to be part-time priestesses. (And Rei's face reddened.)
Rei's father is also mentioned in the manga, but we do not know his name or what he looks like. The picture below is only from a fuzzy memory of Hino Rei.
In manga 11, it is revealed that Rei's father, Hino-san, is a high standing government official. They are very rich and powerful in Japan. But it is also revealed that Rei doesn't like her father, who is so busy in politics that he neglected his family, even her mother who then became weak. She rarely sees her father, and usually only during April 17, her birthday.
What we do have is a picture of Rei's beautiful mother. In the manga, Rei wore the necklace of her mother and she could be identified by it.
Actually, I think that Rei descended from Japan's high nobility such as that of a samurai lord. When the samurai was abolished, some became administrators of government and it is these samurai lords who controlled some of the shrines. And her grandfather, who owns a big shrine, and her father, who is in a powerful government official, it is highly possible that Hino Rei descended from old nobility.
