karin aoi! dna operator from the future, and my favorite anime character...=)
dna^2 is a bit ecchi in some respects, but much less so than, say, I"S (but then, i don't know of many series that are more ecchi than I"s. and i don't want to know.). it's by the same person, Katsura Masakazu.
the basic storyline goes like this: in the faraway future, there is a MAJOR overpopulation problem. it sucks. there're waaaaaaaaaaay too many people wandering around the earth, and when researchers tried to find the cause of this problem, they ended up tracing things all the way back to this one guy, Junta Momonari. he's a MegaPlayboy, who (bleh!) had 100 kids by 100 different women. GROSS! you think? yeah, i agree. but that's just part of it. anyway, he's got these MegaPlayboy genes (arrrgh, anyone having bad flashbacks to Bio??) which he passed on to his 100 kids, and so they all become MegaPlayers and go off and have 100 kids of their own. the genes keep being transferred...and finally it ends up being this horrible overpopulation problem.
so karin aoi, dna operator, is hired by the government for a ridiculous amount of money to go back in time and shoot the megaplayboy with a DCM bullet (err..DNA Control Mechanism? I dunno.) to stop him from becoming a megaplayboy. so she heads back (all the while dreaming of what's gonna happen after she gets paid...all that stuff about nice garden, cute pet, nice husband, and SWEEET SWEET HOME!) but yeah, anyway, she goes back, bugs a few people, and finds Junta Momonari.
junta is this sorry excuse for a guy who has a major girl allergy. every time he sees any partially nude girl, or comes in contact with a girl, he starts puking like crazy. he likes this girl, named Saeki Tomoko, but she's gorgeous and is going out with someone already, this player called Sagashita Ryuji. he keeps cheating on her though, so she pretends to like junta to get back at him. which practically breaks poor junta's heart when he finds out.
well, karin can hardly believe this sad pukey dude is THE legendary MegaPlayboy, but all the dna stats match up, so she asks him to meet her at a coffee shop and she explains the overpopulation problem to him. (in the meantime, he begins to think she's very cute. she IS!) and then she shoots him with the DCM bullet. nice. quick. efficient.
well, karin thinks her job is over till she gets contacted by her boss, Yokomori, who says that nothing has happened. overpopulation's still a prob. that's when he tells karin that she took the wrong DCM bullet!
karin, like a retard, has shot junta with the wrong DCM bullet. (dumb dork, she even marked the right one with a red line and still took the wrong one...) and to make things worse, she has now turned him INTO the megaplayboy! every time he gets near a girl, megaplay goes into action and he starts....*glittering*. the megaplay DNA hasn't stabilized yet...but it soon will and then there's no stopping the megaplayboy! the government project doesn't have enough funding to support karin in the future for too much longer, so she's gotta get it right....the penalty being death.
so karin sets about following junta around and trying to stop the megaplayboy from emerging. she finds that he has a childhood friend named Ami, who's this tomboyish character always beating up on junta. but it's Ami who is unmoved by the megaplay characteristics (while all other girls are swooning, including Tomoko...AND Karin herself) so karin decides Ami is the deciding factor in whether junta will be a megaplayboy or not. if he could only fall in love with ami, everything would be okay.....
well, karin's boss gets the *RIGHT* DCM teleported to her...and so she decides to shoot junta. this is after a big struggle, since karin has begun to care about junta as well...and shooting him with the DCM will control the DNA and also erase his memories of her....but anyway, she shoots, but accidentally hits ryuji instead! (yeah, you're wondering how the heck karin got to be a dna operator in the first place? i often wonder myself...though i still love her)
so now, because of karin's second DCM, ryuji's got this weird power that enables him to absorb other people's energy and like....assume their forms. it's kinda weird and freaky cuz like the dumbass he is, he starts absorbing power like crazy and turns into this hideous gargoyle thing. then he tries to beat junta up for tomoko's benefit...cuz he's jealous since tomoko fell for the megaplayboy and doesn't like him anymore...and is sorta like "see how puny this guy is and how strong I am! now you GOTTA love me! mwahaha"
ryuji almost succeeds in slaughtering junta, but junta allows his megaplayboy self to manifest and ends up whipping ryuji. so there. but tomoko realizes that ryuji actually DOES love her *gasp* and wanted to prove it...he was serious about her even though he cheated. (aiii...i suppose this is similar to what battered women may think when their husbands hit them...)
anyway, junta realizes he's in love with ami, so things are ok (since as long as he loves ami, she can stop the MegaPlayboy from showing up), and karin leaves to go back to the future.
WAI! NEXT PART!
the second series of the anime (i haven't read the manga yet...) starts with karin coming back in another project to study junta and make sure nothing happens.
suddenly ANOTHER time machine like karin's secretly comes to town. this contains this evil person Mori who wants to like..i dunno, take over the world. and another cute girl called Lulala (yeah, don't ask about the name...)
the thing is, that DCM bullet that karin shot ryuji with on accident is actually not a destroying/controlling thing for the megaplay characteristic...it actually sort of enhances it and it's a form of mind control. Mori wants to be able to control all those people with megaplay genes, so in the future he'll have this humungo army of junta's descendants. and since they have megaplay genes which endow them with physical/mental prowess, they'll be these wonderful psychic soldiers.
Lulala is the youngest of junta's descendants. she's also been a follower of Mori all her life. it's now her job to shoot junta with the *right* DCM and let Mori control his mind. so she does, in spite of ami's attempts to protect junta. and so now Mori's got Ryuji (who WAS in the hospital recuperating from the fight with junta but with mind control seems perfectly fine except that he goes around looking like a zombie...) AND junta as his psychic soldiers. anyway....karin finds out about Mori's evil plan and *duhduhduhhhhhh* is determined to stop him. but he sends his psychic soldiers + lulala to go kill her. karin puts up a good fight (oh i love this part of the anime)...but they get her cornered.
somehow junta gets free of the mind control little by little and defends karin from getting killed....by lulala...and convinces lulala to stop following Mori...and destroys Mori's stupid mind controller thingamabob. (junta does have his uses sometimes.) and. yeah. karin's boss Yokomori comes to the past with lots of soldiers because they've found out about Mori's plan. but before they arrest Mori, Mori shoots himself. nice eh?
anyway.....karin has to go back to the future. *sob* even though she loves junta. but she leaves him with ami, tells ami to take care of him...then she shoots junta with the (seriously now) RIGHT DCM bullet. this will erase all his memories of the whole affair. then karin hops into a time machine and goes off with lulala and yokomori. junta wakes up...with no remembrance that anything has happened. ami remembers, but just tells junta that he missed his chance to become a megaplayboy of the century. the only thing left behind by the people from the future is the shell of the last DCM bullet.
yes, i realize the manga story is a *bit* different. i'll get around to that when i actually have the time to read the manga or buy it...which will be..uh..next summer? =T the basics are like this: pretty much everything is the same, except that there's more of a mix-up with DCM bullets. Mori is this sadistic guy who wants to kill off all the trashy failures of humans in the world (he includes karin in this description. HMPH!) and needs pyschic soldiers to help him do this. he and Lulala come to the past to 1) kill karin because in the future, she and junta get married and have a kid named Jun who inherits his father's "pure heart" and is really powerful, and is in the middle of battling his 100 brothers/sisters and Mori. 2) shoot Junta with the "right" DCM so he isn't "pure-hearted" anymore and will have a kid with Lulala so that her child will be twice as powerful a psychic soldier. talk about incest. and through to the end of the whole story, i don't think ami knows about the MegaPlay thing.
