hmm..very blurry scan...looked much better in the book...
Shin-Shunkaden is focused on a girl whose name in Japanese I do not know...though you can see the Chinese above. It means "spring" and "sweet-smelling"...? Maybe it is Shunka or something like the title you know? Either way, the story begins with a legend about a girl with that name, and how she fell in love with this guy (his name was like "mong long" in Chinese, also above...err..my ping ying sucks, sorry...but yeah, it means "dream" and "dragon") and was faithful to him forever, never loving another. Something like that. It made her out as this kind of beautiful, quiet, serene type of person. Then the narration reads "But THIS Shunka (or whatever her name is) is a liiiiittle bit different!" (and here there is a picture of our manga character grinning and wielding a huge sword or something.)
Anyway, the girl lives with her mother who is some kind of doctor or...I dunno how to describe her, like a sorceress? That's too powerful of a word...she has a technique with hidden weapons and stuff...magic...spells..argh, you'll have to read it to understand. Something about secret arts? Anyway, all throughout the land there are two classes of people; the everyday commoner and then there's this other class of people...in Chinese they are the "liang ban" (as in "two" and "class" or something)...this class is sorta like...the snotty class that was born to rule or something. Anyway, some of these people are really mean and, well, snotty, but nobody can do anything to them because the rule is that if anything happens to them then the commoners will suffer the consequences. Only a person in possession of this legendary talisman-thing (it's like this weird hexagonal star-yin-yang thing...) has the power/right to kill/judge anyone of the ruling class.
Anyway, the "king" so to speak, and his son, of the land where what's-her-name and her mom live are really gross and mean and stuff, and make people's lives a pain just for fun. Plus the "king" dude takes a liking to the girl's mom, cuz she's really pretty. (I think her father died...I have my own ideas about who he was, but I'm not saying anything...) But the girl is really hyperactive and really good with all sorts of weapons, so she manages to beat up the dumb henchmen and guards working for the "king" and his son, and also to scare the king away from her mother and from other townspeople. On a daily basis.
One day this stranger shows up at their house. He's this wanderer good-for-nothing guy who eats a LOT of food. His name also happens to be "mong long" like the guy in the legend...(hmmm...) He finds out about how evil the ruling class in that land is. Then the girl's mother is carried off by the "king"....so the girl goes chasing after trying to find her mother and keep that ugly "king"'s dirty hands off her. She even smacks the king's son around.
When she finally gets to the room where her mother and the king are, though, she is too late--her mother has committed suicide by stabbing herself with a sword to keep from having the king rape her. Needless to say Shunka or whatever her name is is really mad at the king but cannot kill him because if she does, the commoners will suffer. At this point, however, the wanderer-good-for-nothing guy comes along holding up the talisman--he is one of those powerful whoevers who get to judge whether the ruling class is worthy or not...he gives the girl permission to kill the king, and she does. Then she cries on his shoulder over her mother. (awww.....=)
After this, the girl really has nothing to stay around for, so she accepts the guy's invitation to travel around with him and find what she's looking for. The rest of the manga is about their travels and bringing justice to different lands. Pretty cool eh? And since the girl in the legend fell in love with a guy who has the same name as the wanderer dude, well,.......Gee, I wonder. =)
go back to anime/manga ok??
