What can I say about an anime that you will either love or hate. It has been a major hit in Japan and most of Asia. There was even a Crayon Shin Chan craze around where I live. I would describe it as a Japanese equivalent to The Simpsons. Talk about a disfunctional family. The main character is a small little boy called Shinnosuke Nohara, or Shin Chan for short. The antics that he get through would even make Bart Simpson sit up and notice, and he is only around 5 years old. The first episode is a classic with Shin Chan doing the Mr. Elephant (Zo san) dance. I cracked up straight away. He is so naughty that in Hong Kong, an episode starts with a message about needed parental supervision. A great way to learn about many Japanese family traditions and customs, the Shin Chan way.
One of the greatest and most induring anime/manga in the history of anime/manga. Goku Son to Japanese is like what Superman is to Americans. This manga was written by the great Akira Toriyama, who also wrote Dr.Slump. Initially based on the tales of the Monkey King, it has grown into an institution. The manga magazine 'Shonen Jump', was reported to have a sales slump just after Dragonball finished. First there was Dragonball, then the more violent Dragonball Z and the spinoff Dragonball GT (Not written by Toriyama). See what all the hype is about, give it a try.
KAME HAME HA
Similar to the American comic Archie, we have a love triangle between a guy and two girls. Only the guy, Kyosuke Kasuga, is blessed with psychic powers. Just what is this guy's problem? Could Archie ever choose between Betty and Veronica? Many guys switched on just to see the lovely Madoka Ayukawa, including me. Hey, she can even play the saxophone! What makes this different to other love triangle stories? See for yourself - A love story with an ending.
Described as a tale similar to Gulliver's Travels, this anime movie is sure to entertain both young and old. Hayao Miyazaki leaves nothing to chance when he makes his movies. Laputa is no exception. The plot revolves around a young girl called Sheeta, who in the beginning is being chased by various people who want the pendant she wears around her neck. This pendant is later reveiled to have special ablities and holds the key to an immense power. A feel good movie with plenty of action, a great storyline with a superb soundtrack.
If there was ever a movie that surrounds us with the illusions of being young, this has got to be it. I have seen it many times and never grow tired of it. Written by the great Hayao Miyazaki, this movie should be seen by everybody. It is THAT good. I even showed it to my friends on my 21st birthday. The story is about two young sisters who move into the country because of their sick mother. In the deep forest, they meet the king of the forest Totoro. Again, a great soundtrack with a simple but effective storyline.
What can I say, I'm a Miyazaki fan. But seriously, this movie is great because of all the things I've said about the other Miyazaki movies and more. This movie has a very strong environmental message that is hard to ignore. That is live in harmony with all living creatures, because each has a part in the scheme of things. In other words, everything has a right to exist. The story is set in the distant future where the world has become a desolate place, where people need gas masks to go outside. The condition of the world is such because of many years of war. One place however, has a constant wind which blows the toxic vapours away. This place is the Valley of Wind, with its Princess Nausicaä. The towns people are forced to go into war and Nausicaä discovers many secrets, including the ecology of the environment. A complex but entertaining movie which will touch many people.
