Rei is a very determined, goal-oriented teenager. Sometimes she can be very bossy, and she likes to give Serena a hard time. Personally, I think Rei has a very fragile self-confidence, and she often picks on Serena when she's feeling unappreciated.
Rei first appears in "An Uncharmed Life," where Jadeite is posing as a helper at Rei's grandfather's temple. Jadeite is giving away charms to young girls, who then disappear on their way home. When Ami and Serena visit the temple to investigate the disappearances, they meet a very bossy and protective Rei. Luna suspects that Rei may be Sailor Mars, so before the girls leave, Luna drops the Mars transformation pen for Rei to find. Even as a normal teenager, Rei has very strong powers. She intuitively senses that something is wrong with the groundskeeper, "Jed," and connects him with the disappearing girls. When she confronts him, he zaps her and sends her to the Negaverse with the others.
Serena disguises herself with the Luna Pen, and when she tries to stop one of the disappearing buses, she finds herself transported to the Negaverse. As Sailor Moon, she challenges Jadeite, and Rei uses her transformation pen to become Sailor Mars. Needless to say, Sailor Moon is quite relieved to have the aid of Mars' Fire! Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars would have been stuck in the Negaverse if not for Ami's wishing them home -- A hole opens up that allows the two Scouts and Tuxedo Mask, with the buses full of charmed girls, to return to the real world.
Rei takes being a Sailor Scout very seriously, always looking out for suspicious happenings and using her mystic powers to zero in on many villians.
