Villains! |
Jadeite is the first General to have the pleasure of being constantly thwarted by the Sailor Scouts. Jadeite's plans for gathering energy usually involve a token of some sort that drains the energy from whoever is close to it (like the flower pins from the talk show, the jewelry at Molly's mother's store, the good luck charms from the Cherry Hill Temple). Jadeite uses a go-between to put his plans in action on Earth, but when the Sailor Scouts destroy his minion, the plan falls to pieces and the source of energy is lost. Queen Beryl becomes increasingly impatient with Jadeite, especially after Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars are discovered and join the battle. When the Scouts finally defeat him at the airport, Queen Beryl freezes him in a crystal of oblivion as a sign that she will not be lenient with those who fail to please her.
The next General we meet is Nephlite, whose plans usually only affect one person at a time. Nephlite uses the stars to find humans who are preparing to expend a large amount of energy. He then appears to them and infects something of great value to them with the Negaforce. Then, when their energy is at the peak, the infected item sucks the energy from them to feed the Negaverse. Serena's best friend Molly falls in love with Nephlite when she first meets him (as Maxfield Stanton), and despite all of Serena's warnings, continues to believe that he is a good person. Nephlite mistakes Molly's adoration as a sign of unusual energy, and he suspects that she may be Sailor Moon. When Molly defends Nephlite from the Sailor Scouts, Nephlite realizes that she cares for him and is surprised to learn that he cares for her in return. Zoicite, another General, becomes impatient for her chance to prove her worth to Queen Beryl, and she sends some Negamonsters to kill him. Nephlite protects Molly in the ensuing battle and takes a mortal blow. In the end, Molly was right to believe in him, because his sacrifice proves that Nephlite wasn't all bad.
Zoicite then gets her turn to battle the Sailor Scouts, as she begins to search for the rainbow crystals. During the battle on the Moon a thousand years ago, Queen Serenity trapped Queen Beryl's seven strongest warriors in her Silver Crystal and shattered it. The seven crystal fragments were then incorporated in people on Earth. When all seven rainbow crystals are gathered, they will reveal the Empyrean Silver Crystal. Zoicite tries to harvest the rainbow crystals from their earthly carriers, but her efforts are hampered by the arrival of Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus. Zoicite does manage to capture five of the rainbow crystals, leaving the monster that forms from the human carrier to fight the Sailor Scouts and be healed by Sailor Moon. In the end, Zoicite tricks Tuxedo Mask into giving her the two rainbow crystals he has in his possession, but then she injures him against Queen Beryl's orders, thereby drawing Queen Beryl's anger down on her. Queen Beryl slays Zoicite, to the utter horror of Malachite, Queen Beryl's fourth General and Zoicite's love.
During the last battle, Tuxedo Mask was captured by the Negaverse and brainwashed to fight against the Sailor Scouts. However, the new Prince Darien and Malachite constantly fight each other in their attempts to coerce the Empyrean Silver Crystal from Sailor Moon. Malachite develops many schemes to trap Sailor Moon, and he usually brainwashes a human to set up the trap for him. Prince Darien often appears as Tuxedo Mask and protects Sailor Moon, but only to prevent Malachite from getting the Empyrean Silver Crystal before Darien can retrieve it. The Sailor Scouts finally defeat Malachite, and then in the ensuing battle with Queen Beryl, Sailor Moon manages to awaken Darien from his mind control. Queen Beryl is defeated, but what about the voice of the Negaverse that she answers to?
Alan and Ann are a pair of aliens searching for energy sources to revitalize the Doom Tree, a huge tree that floats in space. If the Doom Tree dies, Alan and Ann die, so the two colorful aliens will stop at nothing to find a good source of energy. Like the Negaverse Generals, Alan and Ann employ monsters to do their dirty work for them: the Cardians. The general tactic is to identify a good energy source, randomly pick a Cardian to harvest the energy, and then sit back and watch the battle from afar. Despite all the energy the two aliens can gather, the Doom Tree continues to wilt, and Alan and Ann grow more and more desperate.
The Sailor Scouts battle a series of Cardians before Ann decides to offer Serena to the Doom Tree. Ann tricks the curious Serena into entering the doorway that leads to the Doom Tree and then traps her inside, where the Doom Tree tries to absorb all of Serena's energy. In response to draining most of the energy from Sailor Moon, the Doom Tree begins to grow out of control.
