Best of John Woo (Wu Yu Lin or Ng Yu Lam) Films

In case you don't know, John Woo is now one of the most prominent director and producer in the Hong Kong film industry. His major break came after the production of a Better Tomorrow with Donald Chow Yun Fat and Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing. Some of his major films are listed below.

A Better Tomorrow I and II ~ Ying Hong Boon Sic (1986-87)
Starring Chow Yun-Fat, Leslie Cheung Kwok-Wing, Ti Lung, Waise Lee Chi-Hung, Emily Chu Bo-Yee, Kenneth Tsang Kong

*****
This is a MUST SEE FILM! It was a huge breakthrough in the HK movie industry and for John Woo. And most importantly, it was a breakthrough for the young Leslie Cheung in his role as Kit, a young rookie cop. This movie tells of the trio heroes, Donald Chow, Ti Lung, and Leslie Cheung. Donald Chow is the bad guy and Ti Lung is an aging gangster who is caught between his friendship with Donald Chow and his younger brother, Cheung. Cheung is so good in this movie, not to mention cute. He's the rookie cop, straight from Cadet School who is determined to do a good job. He will make you faint, but doesn't he always. Anyway, this film is not just about violence and guns, it has a lot of deeper meaning that will make you feel really uneasy at the end. The second series of this is just as good. It shows the three heroes again and something terrible happens. Like all John Woo films, the cinemotography is excellent and some scenes could make you almost cry. A MUST SEE!

The Killer (1990)
Starring Dik Lung, Chow Yun Fat, Sally Yep Sin Man

*****
Chow Yun Fat plays this hitman who accidentally wounds Sally Yep in the eye while on of his killer hunts in a nightclub. Being a nice guy, he agrees to pay for her expensive operation. This requires some big bucks and he takes up some more hitman assignments. Meanwhile, policeman Dik Lung is on his track and as he comes closer and closer, he begins to understand the other side of the killer more. More than just a good and bad guy's story. Lots of cool gun fighting.

Bullet in the Head - Tu Xue Ji Deng (1990)
Starring Tony Leung Chiu Wei, Jackie Cheung Hok You, Waise Lee Z Hong, Simon Yum Tak Wah, Yolinda Yan Cho Sing, Fennie Yuen

*****
This has to be one of the best films of all time. It tells about friendship in a period of disaster and the loss of innocence in three young friends. Tony Leung, Jackie Cheung, and Waise Lee are three young streetwise friends playing it rough in the streets of Hong Kong in the 1960s. However, they end up in some trouble and escape to war-torn Vietnam to hit it big in the triads. They also meet Simon Yum in Vietnam where he performed his most beautiful perfomance. But, due to greed, they end up turning against each other and going through trouble after trouble, it leads three of them to death and a loss of innocence in the fourth. This is one of the most controversial, violent, depressing, but yet most unforgettable story of friendship and war in the 1960s. A must.

Hard Boiled ~ Lak Sao Sun Tam (1992)
Starring Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Donald Chow Yun Fat, Wong Sal Sung, Kwan Hoi San, Dong Wai, Ng Shui Ting, Au Yeung Chun Wah, Teresa Mo Shun Quan

*****
This film is one of the best! At a first view, it may seem like the cops and bad guys story but underneath, it is more than that. Donald Chow plays Tequila, a hot headed and cool cop and Tony Leung plays a young rebel cop. He is so cute and cool in this one. Donald is trying to bust the bad guys once again and he almost ruins Tony's coverup. When he finds out that Tony is one of his guys, the two work together to get Wang Sal Sung climaxing in the breathless hospital scene.
