Nagako's Best Sugar Cookies

Okay, so maybe he doesn't cook. We're not even sure if he eats past Miaka's hallucinations, but you must do something to celebrate his birthday!

Yield: About 6 dozen. Like it ever works out this way... :)

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup butter or regular margarine, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • BLUE food coloring
  • 1/4 cup sugar (topping)

Directions:

  1. Sift flour with baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg; set aside.
  2. In large bowl with electric mixer, at medium speed, beat butter, sugar, and egg until light and fluffy.
  3. At low speed, beat in sour cream and vanilla until smooth; add food coloring until desired color is achieved.
  4. Gradually add flour mixture, beating until well combined.
  5. With rubber scraper, form dough into a ball. Wrap in waxed paper or foil; refridgerate several hours, or overnight.
  6. Divide dough into four parts. Refridgerate until ready to roll out.
  7. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 375F. Lightly grease cookie sheets.
  8. On well-floured surface, roll dough, one part at a time 1/4 inch thick.
  9. With heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out cookies. Using spatula, place, two inches apart, on prepared cookie sheets.
  10. Sprinkle tops of cookies with sugar. Reroll trimmings and cut.
  11. Bake 10 - 12 minutes, or until (well... golden doesn't work in this case...) until when a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Remove to wire rack; cool.

Enjoy! Don't let Miaka find them, though. You may not have any left for yourself. ;)
